2011 Buick LaCrosse Earns NHTSA Five-Star Overall Safety Rating

Highest possible overall vehicle score for safety achieved in new, more

stringent testing
2011-04-25

DETROIT – The 2011 Buick LaCrosse received a five-star overall safety rating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program (www.SaferCar.gov), the agency has announced. Starting with 2011 models, NHTSA has introduced tougher tests and more rigorous requirements for its five-star ratings that provide more information about safety feature performance and crash-avoidance technologies.

The LaCrosse received five-star ratings for both the Overall Frontal Crash and Overall Side Crash. These crash test ratings are intrumental in helping prospective car shoppers evaluate the safety performance of new vehicles.

“Car buyers today want the peace of mind that comes with buying a vehicle they know will help protect their family,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick marketing. “This five-star overall vehicle score for safety shows Buick can equip an affordable luxury midsize sedan with top safety features.”

The LaCrosse offers these safety features:

■Intelligent technologies delivering a “360-degree” field of vision behind the steering wheel for a greater feeling of comfort, control and safety
■Side blind zone alert technology notifying the driver if a vehicle in adjacent lanes is traveling in the driver’s blind spot
■Rearview camera system featuring a display integrated into the navigation system screen
■Front- and side-impact air bags as well as roof-mounted head-curtain air bags that help protect occupants in the event of a rollover crash
■An advanced front-seat safety belt system including a dynamic locking latchplate, dual pretensioners that help tighten the safety belt for earlier restraint of the occupant during the onset of moderate to severe crashes; and load limiters that help limit the forces on the occupant to help reduce the risk of injury
■GM’s StabiliTrak stability- and traction-control system
■OnStar (included for the first year of ownership)
GM engineers developed the dynamic locking latchplate, which is part of the front safety belt system. It locks under dynamic crash loading to help securely restrain the occupant’s pelvis, and it works in concert with the safety belt load limiting feature to control loads on the occupant’s upper torso. This safety feature helped the LaCrosse achieve the five-star frontal crash rating for both driver and front-seat passenger.

The Foundation of Civic
Beneath the aerodynamic skin of every 2012 Civic is Honda's commitment to its foundational pillars of safety, fun-to-drive performance, style, comfort, convenience, durability, quality and refinement. The end result is a vehicle that's not only a smart decision when new, but can also provide long-term joy of ownership unique to this class of vehicle.

Safety – Advanced safety systems include Honda-exclusive Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE)™ body structure for frontal collision energy management and vehicle-to-vehicle crash compatibility, and a long list of standard safety equipment including two-row side curtain airbags, dual-stage, multiple-threshold driver's and front passenger's airbags, driver's and front passenger's side airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Brake Assist, and a new Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering system that helps the driver steer in the ideal direction to mitigate oversteer or understeer situations. Internal crash test information* indicates that the new Civic should achieve top marks in both the federal government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program** and the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) designation as a “TOP SAFETY PICK.”

Fun to Drive – Every Civic model is designed to be fun to drive, with a MacPherson strut front suspension, a multi-link rear suspension, and front and rear stabilizer bars. Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS) improves steering response at low speeds while rewarding the driver with outstanding feel at higher speeds. In addition, with EPS there is no parasitic power loss to the engine as is common with a traditional hydraulically boosted steering system – which benefits both power output and fuel economy. Standard 15-inch diameter wheels with all-season tires, 16-inch wheels on Civic EX and Civic EX-L models, and 17-inch wheels on Civic Si models (with performance-oriented summer tires available) provide a satisfying blend of ride comfort and all-weather grip. The Civic Si Sedan and Civic Si Coupe further expand the driving fun with a new, larger displacement (201 horsepower) engine and specially tuned suspension.

Distinctive, Aerodynamic Styling – As a new interpretation of the current Civic's iconic "one-motion" mono-form shape, the 2012 Civic is designed to convey an even more substantial, high-energy appearance. The exterior styling of both Civic Sedan and Coupe models showcases the clean-yet-powerful body lines with sleekly angled windshields, wide stances and pronounced character lines along the profile. The look of the Civic Coupe conveys an aggressive attitude with a more angular front fascia, mesh grille and a tapered rear roofline that flows smoothly into the trunk. Hidden aerodynamic features such as flat-bottom unit-body construction, precisely placed aero strakes, and other features work together to help the Civic achieve excellent fuel-economy.

Comfort, Convenience and Personalization – Crisp, smart and driver focused, the new Civic's 5-passenger interior is a careful blend of form and function, with an advanced instrument layout that is unique in its class. A “smart interface” approach divides the interior into different areas, with key instrument displays located above the steering wheel. Secondary information is located lower in the area, while a third area to the driver's right groups controls that are not essential to driving. New for 2012, the intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) on all models (except Civic DX) provides a 5-inch color monitor for the display of vehicle information and audio information including album artwork (if available). Along with customizable vehicle settings, the i-MID includes the ability to upload personal wallpaper backgrounds. The Civic can be further personalized for driving with Eco Assist on all models (except Civic Si), the first time this feature has been included on any non-hybrid Honda model in America. The performance-oriented Civic Si exclusively features a new Sequential Rev-limit Indicator and a Power Monitor screen that can be displayed on the new i-MID.

Durability, Quality and Reliability – For many customers the Durability, Quality and Reliability (DQR) of the Honda Civic is what keeps them returning year after year. These fine qualities – and the resale or trade-in value they engender for the Civic – become a powerful purchase incentive. Virtually every major study of vehicle residual value has shown that the Civic typically has one of the highest residual values in the industry. As an end result, a high residual or resale value makes the Civic's true cost of ownership less than many lower-priced competitors.

Powertrain
Honda has long been known for its world-class engine technology and a continuous process of innovation and improvement. At the core of Honda's powertrain engineering is the ongoing pursuit of greater performance, enhanced fuel economy and low emissions. The 2012 Civic model range embodies Honda's ongoing effort to offer a wide range of powertrain choices including gasoline, hybrid and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) that offer unique solutions for different buyers.

An advanced 140-horsepower, 1.8-liter i-VTEC® engine is standard in the Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe and Civic HF, with a choice of a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission (automatic only for Civic EX-L Coupe, Civic EX and EX-L Sedans, and Civic HF). A variant of the same 1.8-liter engine develops 110 horsepower in the compressed natural gas (CNG) powered Civic Natural Gas, which comes standard with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The performance-oriented Si model has a 201-horsepower, 2.4-liter i-VTEC® engine, matched with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission. And finally, the Civic Hybrid is powered by an ultra-efficient 1.5-liter i-VTEC® engine with Integrated Motor Assist® producing 110-horsepower. This is coupled to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe, Civic HF and Civic Natural Gas Powertrain
The Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe, Civic HF and Civic Natural Gas benefit from an updated and refined version of the 1.8-liter I-4 engine that powered the previous generation Civic. The new engine has extensive changes that reduce friction, improve emissions performance and increase fuel economy.

The engine is a Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) 1.8-liter inline 4-cylinder design with 16 valves, i-VTEC®, and a dual-stage intake manifold. In the Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe and Civic HF, the engine produces 140 horsepower at 6300 rpm, and 128 lb-ft. of torque at 4300 rpm. In the Civic Sedan and Coupe, the 1.8-liter engine has an estimated* EPA city/highway fuel economy rating of 28/39 miles per gallon when equipped with automatic transmission.

* Based on 2012 EPA mileage estimates. Use for comparison purposes only. Do not compare to models before 2008. Your actual mileage will vary depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle.

This same powertrain in the Civic HF achieves a higher estimated* city/highway fuel economy rating of 29/41 miles per gallon with its standard 5-speed automatic transmission, primarily due to reductions in aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance. With a version of the same 1.8-liter engine, the Civic Natural Gas powertrain develops 110 horsepower and 106 lb-ft of torque. The Civic Natural Gas has an estimated* city/highway fuel economy of 27/38 miles per gallon.

* Fuel economy values determined from manufacturer test results. Official 2012 EPA mileage estimates not available at time of publication. Mileage figures shown for comparison purposes only. Actual mileage may vary.

Civic Si Powertrain
The 2012 Civic Si is powered by a new 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that is the largest and most powerful of any Civic introduced in the United States. The dual overhead cam (DOHC) engine is an all-aluminum design that uses four valves per cylinder (16 valves total), a high-performance version of the i-VTEC® system and a specially tuned high-volume intake manifold. The Civic Si produces 201 horsepower – up four horsepower from the 2.0-liter engine it replaces. The i-VTEC® "intelligent" valve-control system, new friction-reducing technologies and extensive weight control measures helps the Civic Si deliver exhilarating acceleration, improved fuel economy and low exhaust emissions.

The new larger displacement engine in the Civic Si delivers peak power at a more accessible 7000 rpm compared to the previous Si engine's 7800 rpm power peak. The engine's increased displacement results in a substantial 22-percent increase in peak torque. The new 170 lb-ft rating occurs at just 4400 rpm, 1700 rpm lower than the previous engine's 139 lb-ft at 6100 rpm. Even with its increase in displacement, horsepower and torque, the 2012 Civic Si has an estimated EPA city rating of 22 mpg (up 1 mpg compared to the 2011 Civic Si) and increases highway fuel economy with a rating of 31 mpg (up 2 mpg compared to the 2011 Civic Si). In addition, the Civic Si engine meets strict Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV-2) emissions standards.

The Civic Si is available exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter. Civic Hybrid Powertrain
The newest-generation Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system fitted to the Civic Hybrid uses a gasoline engine as the primary source of power while an electric motor provides additional power and electricity regeneration capability. The new IMA system consists of a larger 1.5-liter i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine connected to a larger, more powerful electric motor and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). A new Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery pack is used to capture and store electricity for the upgraded 23-horsepower electric motor. The new Lithium-Ion battery is more powerful, lighter and more compact than the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery it replaces.

Together, the gasoline engine and electric motor team to produce 110 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 127 lb-ft of torque at 1000-3500 rpm. Compared to the previous generation Civic Hybrid, the new Civic Hybrid has the same peak horsepower, but achieves it at 500 fewer rpm. The new Hybrid has gained 4 lb-ft of torque, and it is spread over a wider rpm range (between 1000 rpm to 3500 rpm) for improved performance during normal city driving.

During acceleration, the engine or the engine and electric motor propel the vehicle. During sustained cruising, the gasoline engine and/or the electric motor can individually propel the vehicle. During braking, the gasoline engine deactivates and the electric motor acts as generator to replenish the Li-Ion battery pack. When the vehicle is at a stop, the engine can enter an idle-stop mode to conserve fuel and reduce emissions – and the engine remains off until the brake pedal is released.

Compared to the previous Civic Hybrid, the fifth-generation Honda IMA powertrain provides improved acceleration at highway speeds, while simultaneously delivering a combined city/highway EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 44 mpg – an increase of 3 mpg from the previous model.

Body
The new 2012 Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe are the most aerodynamically and aggressively styled models in the model's history – and also the most functional and versatile in how most Civic customers like to use their cars. As in past years, both 5-passenger sedan and 5-passenger coupe body styles are available. The sedan design is sophisticated and efficient, while the coupe is more dramatic and exciting. Both are highly aerodynamic, including a sleek windshield angle with narrow A-pillars (and thinner C-pillars in the Coupe) for excellent outward visibility, numerous under-vehicle aerodynamic aids, and even low rolling-resistance tires on all models except Civic Si.

Apart from the headlights, hood and front fenders, no visible exterior body panels, lights, glass, grille or bumpers are shared between the Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe. Differences between models include aggressive front grille, front and rear fascias and other elements for the Civic Si Coupe and Civic Si Sedan, and extensive aerodynamic aids for the high fuel economy Civic HF. However beneath the skin, the underlying chassis construction is the same between the Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe, except that at 105.1 inches, the wheelbase of the Civic Sedan is two inches longer than that of the Civic Coupe.

Civic Sedan Design
Though roomier inside than previous models, the 2012 Civic Sedan adds a sophisticated flair while retaining the Coupe's dramatic styling character. Its four doors provide improved utility, with excellent ingress and egress for all passengers. In back, the trunk lid gracefully meets the rear window and seamlessly ties in with the overall styling of the car. Standard are 15-inch diameter steel wheels with full wheel covers, 15-inch aluminum wheels for the Civic HF, 16-inch aluminum wheels for the Civic EX and Civic EX-L models, and 17-inch aluminum wheels for the Civic Si.

Civic Coupe Design
Everything about Civic Coupe says this is a driver's car, with the short, wide front fascia generating an aggressive overall look. Adding to the Civic's distinctly sporty and dynamic flavor are wide, angular headlights, a bold grille, and fog lamp openings in the lower fascia. A wedge design continues along the Civic Coupe body side, with the hood, windshield and cabin all forming decisive character lines that create a strong sense of motion. The high rear deck further reinforces the Coupe's dynamic wedge styling, while a functional rear lip spoiler and 16-inch aluminum wheels on Civic EX and Civic EX-L models (17-inch wheels on the Civic Si) add to its clear sporting intentions.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE™) Body Structure
The Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure is a pioneering Honda unit-body construction technology. Introduced to Civic in the 2006 model, it increases the body's ability to disperse crash energy in a frontal collision and is anticipated to help deliver top safety ratings.

Rigid Unit-Body Construction and Energy-Absorbing Crush Zones
The Civic's aerodynamic unit-body structure plays a strong role in helping both the coupe and sedan achieve their expected high fuel-economy and projected top safety ratings, but it also contributes to a smooth, quiet ride and a fun-to-drive character. A rigid body allows for noise and other disturbances to be more efficiently isolated by bushings and other dampers throughout the vehicle.

Increased Use of High-Strength Steel
Both the Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe feature a rigid and lightweight unit-body design made possible by increased use of high-strength steel. The 2012 Civic Sedan now uses 55 percent high-strength steel, compared to 50 percent in the previous generation. This contributes to a 7-percent reduction in body weight compared to 2011 Civic Sedan. Although the body structure is now lighter, static and dynamic rigidity are 10 percent better.

In addition, more slender A-pillars (also constructed of high-strength steel) provide a greater field of view without compromising body strength. Along with a new side mirror shape, the thinner A-pillars also help minimize wind noise at highway speeds.

Aerodynamic Enhancements
The 2012 Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe are just as aerodynamically efficient as their appearance suggests, resulting in improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, improved handling at higher speeds and lower levels of interior noise. The improvements are the result of extensive modeling and testing conducted during the design process. Examples include:

•A guide under the front bumper directs the flow of air into the engine compartment for cooling.
•Lightweight plastic parts under the engine bay, the fuel tank and parts of the rear underbody enhance airflow.
•Front spoiler and strakes ahead of the front and rear tires help direct air flow around the tires and wheel wells.
•A new flat under-floor significantly improves aerodynamic efficiency by helping air to move over, around and under the vehicle – resulting in a significant 3.4-percent lower coefficient of drag as compared to the 2011 Civic.
•Low-drag side mirrors reduce wind noise by minimizing turbulence (Civic EX and Civic EX-L models also include heated side mirrors).

Multi-Reflector Halogen Headlights
All 2012 Civic models are equipped with multi-reflector halogen headlights with an auto-off feature (Auto On/Off on EX-L, Hybrid and Si) for confident nighttime driving, along with a dynamic and dramatic appearance. The auto-off feature automatically turns off the headlights when the key is removed from the vehicle. Inboard mounted halogen high beams offer further nighttime driving confidence with a crisp, bright and focused light beam. The halogen high beams serve double-duty as the daytime running lights (DRL) by operating at a lower voltage. All Civic models include a headlights-on reminder.

Meanwhile Civic Si Sedan and Coupe models add fog lights located in openings below the front bumper. Integrated fog lights are likewise available as a dealer-installed accessory on other 2012 Civic models.

LED Brake Lights on Civic Hybrid
The 2012 Civic Hybrid's taillight system features attention-grabbing LED illumination for the brake lights and soft glowing surface lighting for the taillights. The sculpted, 3-dimensional look of the units adds a distinctive and technical styling element to the rear view of the Civic.
Additionally, LED lighting uses less power and longer service life compared to traditional tungsten light bulbs, which is consistent with the vehicle's emphasis on efficiency.

Power Windows
All 2012 Civic models (except for Civic DX) feature power windows with auto-reverse. All trim levels (except the Civic DX) also feature an auto up/down driver's window for added convenience.

One-Touch Power Moonroof with Tilt Feature
Civic EX, Civic EX-L and Civic Si models have one-touch power moonroof actuation with tilt feature that will open or close with one touch of the switch. The moonroof's thin construction allows for maximum headroom and improved comfort. Also included is a sliding sunshade that automatically opens with the moonroof, and the shade can be closed to block sunlight. An auto-reverse feature is built into the moonroof operation.

Security System with Remote Entry
Remote entry and remote trunk entry systems are now standard on all 2012 Civic models except for DX. Using a wave key with integrated remote buttons, all doors can be locked with one touch of the LOCK button. Pressing UNLOCK once unlocks the driver's door, while pressing it twice unlocks all doors. The trunk can also be unlocked by pressing a separate trunk button. The system has an operating range of up to 50 feet.

Cargo Area
Another strength of the new 2012 Civic Coupe and Sedan is impressive storage capacity. The Civic Sedan offers 12.5 cu-ft of storage space (12.1 cu-ft. for Sedan EX-L), exceeding the 12.0 cu-ft trunk volume of the previous generation – an improvement of 0.5 cu-ft or 4.2-percent. The Civic Coupe trunk offers 11.6 cu-ft of storage, a slight increase over the previous model's 11.5 cu-ft. Folding the second-row seatback yields additional room for the storage of bulky items. Civic Hybrid and Civic Natural Gas have a fixed rear seatback.

Conveniently placed latches enable customers to lower the fold-down rear seatback from the trunk. The Civic EX and Civic EX-L and Civic Si models add even more convenience with 60/40 split fold-down rear seatbacks, which allow simultaneous passenger seating and cargo storage.

Exterior Colors
The 2012 Civic offers a dynamic color palette that adds character and boldness to the entire model range. All-new colors for the 2012 Civic Sedan include Dyno Blue Pearl, Cool Mist Metallic and Crimson Pearl. While on the 2012 Civic Coupe, Dyno Blue Pearl and Cool Mist Metallic are new additions to the color lineup. Civic Si Coupe and Civic Si Sedan models add a unique Sunburst Orange Pearl, while the Civic Hybrid comes in Green Opal Metallic. All the new colors change in appearance depending on sunlight conditions, further amplifying the Civic's dramatic bodylines.

Chassis
The 2012 Civic chassis was developed to maximize driving enjoyment as well as passenger comfort and safety. The chassis features Honda's highly developed MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension systems, along with Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering for excellent steering performance and improved efficiency. Regardless of whether it is a versatile Civic Sedan or Coupe, sporty Civic Si, or efficient Civic Hybrid, clean Civic Natural Gas or value-oriented Civic HF model, every 2012 Honda offers a high level of refinement, confident handling and a fun driving experience – while also providing excellent safety.

New Chassis Features for 2012
•Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control is now standard
•Brake Assist is now standard
•Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS)

Additional Chassis Highlights
A slightly shorter wheelbase (reduced 1.2 inches in the Sedan, to 105.1 inches; and reduced 1.1 inches in the Coupe, to 103.2 inches) increases overall maneuverability and the Civic's fun-to-drive character. But at the same time, the overall length, width and height are the same as previous models, with increased interior roominess in the Sedan. The result is a more responsive vehicle that is also roomier inside.

The Civic HF further reduces the rolling resistance of the tires by an additional 21-percent compared to the standard Civic tires.

Interior
Creative and expressive, roomy and practical – the 2012 Civic interior is as impressive as the body design, while featuring a bold and advanced instrument layout that's unlike anything in the class. The new Civic interior builds on the already sophisticated design of the current generation Civic by adopting a “smart interface” approach. With this approach, the interior is divided into different areas for key instrument displays above the steering wheel, secondary information located lower in the area visible through the steering wheel, and a third area to the driver's right. Overall, the controls are clear and easy to operate, with a cleanly simple layout and highly intuitive operation.

All the shapes, textures and colors work together to create a welcoming contemporary environment that is both visually and tactilely rewarding. Everything the driver needs is close at hand and materials and finishes are as carefully selected as the equipment features. Distinct upper and lower areas of the instrument panel have their own unique materials that create visual zones that add beauty and richness.

Building on the successful packaging on the previous generation, the 2012 Civic Sedan has gained a small amount of interior passenger volume and also made gains in shoulder and hip room. The Civic Coupe gains an increase in front shoulder room. Both the Sedan and Coupe are classified as compact vehicles by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Interior Dimensions
Though the 2012 Civic Sedan is externally the same width and length, it has gained in interior passenger volume by 3.7 cubic feet, and has more front shoulder room and additional front and rear hip room. The Civic Coupe has gained 1.2 inches in front shoulder room. Other interior dimensions are within an inch of the previous generation.

Advanced Instrumentation
•Two-Tier Instrument Panel – Like its predecessor, the 2012 Civic uses a unique 2-tier instrument panel for shorter eye movements between the most commonly referenced gauges. As a result, while driving there is reduced recognition time for the driver. Instrument panel illumination is blue with white backlighting except on Civic Si models, which use red-backlit instrumentation. Progressive illumination welcomes the driver into the vehicle and brightens to 100 percent when the key is inserted in the ignition switch.

•Intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) – The latest generation i-MID displays a wide variety of audio, trip computer, vehicle maintenance, fuel-economy, navigation (when equipped with navigation system) and warning information on a bright, full-color 5-inch (measured diagonally) LCD display and includes a range of customizable features.
•Eco Assist – All 2012 Civics (except Civic Si) come with an Eco Assist™ display within the instrument panel that is designed to help the driver develop and maintain a fuel-efficient driving style. The background lighting of the segmented vertical bars located directly to the left and the right of the speedometer transition from green (more efficient) to blue (less efficient) in response to driving style. The system continuously monitors and displays the impact of a driving style on the vehicle's fuel efficiency and transitions colors to provide feedback that can help a less-efficient driver make adjustments to driving style.•ECON Mode – All 2012 Civics (except Civic Si models) are equipped with an ECON button that modifies several operating parameters of the vehicle to further enhance the potential for fuel efficiency. With ECON Mode activated, the Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system provides more gradual response, shift mapping is reconfigured on automatic transmission models, and climate control operation is altered.
•Maintenance Minder Display – Every Civic has a Maintenance Minder™ system that tracks service-related items based on vehicle usage. Maintenance Minder automatically indicates when standard service should be performed based on actual driving conditions.
•Sequential Rev-limit Indicator – Performance-oriented Civic Si models have a new sequential rev-limit indicator comprised of i-VTEC® and shift indicators. The i-VTEC® indicator lights up when the VTEC® system shifts from low- to high-rpm camshaft profiles, and the rev-limit indicator illuminates sequentially as engine speed rises.
•Civic Si Power Monitor – Civic Si models include a Power Monitor screen that can be displayed on the i-MID to show real-time information regarding engine output.
•Civic Hybrid IMA System Monitor – A unique feature of the Civic Hybrid i-MID is a driver-feedback system that monitors driving style and displays (with an Eco Score) how it affects fuel efficiency. The system includes an Eco coaching i-MID screen that shows driving style efficiency, and a unique hybrid power-flow meter shows the interaction between the gasoline engine and the IMA's electric motor and batteries. When the Civic Hybrid ignition is switched off, a special Eco Score function displays the driver's success using icons representing leaves.

Safety
The 2012 Honda Civic includes a high level of standard safety equipment in every model. The 2012 Civic integrates Honda's most advanced safety technology including the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, two-row side curtain airbags and front side airbags in every model and trim level. The ACE™ body structure enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. The ACE™ design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles involved in the crash. ACE™ also increases the likelihood of the two vehicle's bumpers properly connecting during a collision– including larger and smaller vehicles and those with differing bumper heights.

Every Civic incorporates side curtain airbags and front side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) as standard equipment. In addition, all seating positions include head restraints that are designed to help mitigate the severity of a neck injury in the event of a rear collision. Additional standard safety features include dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Brake Assist, and front seatbelts with automatic-tensioners and load limiters. Every 2012 Civic model also features daytime running lights (DRL) and a pedestrian injury mitigation design for the front of the vehicle.

The ninth-generation Civic is expected to earn top safety ratings for the driver and front passenger and rear seat passengers in both frontal and side impact crash-safety tests, as well top roll-over resistance ratings, undertaken by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It is also anticipated to earn top safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Manufacturing
More than 95-percent of Civics are currently produced and assembled in the United States and Canada using domestic and globally sourced parts. Civic Sedan and all Civic Natural Gas models are produced at Honda Manufacturing of Indiana (HMIN). All Civic Sedan, all Civic Coupe and all Civic Si models are produced and assembled at the Honda of Canada Manufacturing plant in Alliston, Ontario. All Civic Hybrid models are produced and assembled in the Honda Motor Co., Ltd., Suzuka, Japan manufacturing facility.

As the newest Honda manufacturing plant, HMIN was designed to have the smallest environmental footprint of all North American automotive facilities, and HMIN is also the third North American Honda plant to be a "zero waste-to-landfill" facility.

Regarding manufacturing within the United States, Honda began assembling motorcycles in America in 1979. Honda began automobile production in the U.S. in 1982 (with the Accord) and was the first Japanese automaker to assemble products for the North American market in the United States. Civic North American production began in 1985.

Overview
Creative and expressive, roomy and practical – the 2012 Civic's interior is as impressive as the body design, while featuring a bold and advanced instrument layout that's unlike anything in the class. The new Civic interior builds on the already sophisticated design of the current generation Civic by adopting a “smart interface” approach. With this approach, the interior is divided into different areas, with the key instrument displays (such as vehicle speed) located exceptionally high up and above the steering wheel rim, close to the driver's line of sight. Secondary information (such as engine rpm) is located lower in the area, visible through the steering wheel. A third area to the driver's right groups controls that are not essential to driving. Overall, the controls are clear and easy to operate, with a cleanly simple layout and highly intuitive operation.

Crisp, smart and fresh, the new Civic's interior is a careful blend of both form and function. All the shapes, textures and colors work together to create a welcoming contemporary environment that is both visually and tactilely rewarding. Everything the driver needs is close at hand and logically placed, but not at the expense of the overall openness of the cabin. The materials and finishes are as carefully selected as the equipment features. Distinct upper and lower areas of the instrument panel have their own unique materials that create visual zones that add beauty and richness. While virtually everything that the driver and passengers come in contact with – from the instrument panel to the switches and controls, to the stitching on the Civic EX-L's perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel – are crafted to be pleasing to the touch, and ideally placed for use.

Building on the successful packaging on the previous generation Civic, the 2012 Civic Sedan has gained a small amount of interior passenger volume and made gains in shoulder and hip room. The Civic Coupe returns with an increase in front shoulder room.

Increased visibility
The 2012 Civic's body and glass have been completely redesigned to provide added outward visibility for the driver and passengers. Added side glass area at the bases of thinner A-pillars improves visibility in turns and eases maneuvering and parking. Thinner C-pillars provide a better rearward view with Civic coupe models.

Two-Tier Instrument Panel
Like its predecessor, the 2012 Civic uses a unique two-tier instrument panel design. Honda research analyzed the eye movements of drivers and prioritized the importance of the Civic's instruments and their placement for quick recognition. Based on this research, a two-tier instrument panel was devised that groups a portion of instrumentation in the conventional location (viewed through the steering wheel), and a separate upper tier that's visible above the steering wheel and close to the driver's line of sight.

A digital speedometer, fuel gauge and instant fuel economy gauge are housed in the upper level to be more in-line with the driver's line-of-sight, resulting in shorter eye movements between the most commonly referenced gauges and the road. The top-tier also includes eco-coaching bars (Civic Si excepted) and the new full-color i-MID (Civic DX excepted), which serves as a multi-function display and provides easy access to a range of features, a number of which are customizable. The i-MID serves as the audio system display and also includes the clock, odometer, trip meter, outside temperature (Civic EX and above) and Maintenance Minder displays. The lower level of the instrument panel houses a tachometer, and a variety of warning indicators. On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the gear selector position is also displayed. Instrument panel illumination on all models except the Si uses a blue color scheme with white backlit buttons. The Civic Si's unique, red-backlit instrument panel accentuates the car's sporting ambience.

Civic Si: Sequential Rev-limit Indicator
For the performance-oriented Civic Si, a new sequential rev-limit indicator is positioned high in the instrument panel, just to the left of the speedometer display where it's close to the driver's line of sight. The sequential rev-limit indicator comprises two main components: an i-VTEC indicator and a redline indicator. The i-VTEC indicator lights up when the VTEC system shifts from the low- to high-rpm cam profiles. The redline indicator is an array of six lights that illuminate sequentially as engine speed rises. The first four lights are orange, and the last two are red. When the second of the two red lights comes on, the engine is producing maximum power. With this sequential presentation, it's easy for the driver to operate the engine in its “sweet spot” while keeping attention on the road during high performance driving.

ECO Assist
All Civic Sedan and Coupe models (except Civic Si) come with ECO-Assist. Located in the upper instrument panel located on either side of the speedometer, the Civic's ECO-Assist display shows how drive energy is being used and coaches the driver to operate the vehicle more efficiently. The system operates in essentially the same manner as on Insight and CR-Z, with blue and green “coaching” bars that illuminate. A blue color signifies inefficient driving, while green means more efficient driving techniques are being used. The color changes gradually in response to driving technique. ECO Assist can also be turned off, using the customizable settings accessed via the i-MID. When off, the ECO Assist coaching bars remain blue.

Intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID)
Positioned in the upper right portion of the instrument panel, a new “intelligent” Multi-Information Display (i-MID) displays data with color and clarity and an interactive element. This bright, full color 6.5-inch (diagonal) LCD W-QVGA display is easy to see and interpret, and lends the Civic a technologically advanced aspect that's new to this class. The i-MID serves as the audio system display and features on-screen icons and prompts make navigation through a range of screens simple and straightforward. In addition to audio information, the i-MID also displays fuel-economy information, as well as Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® information and turn-by-turn navigation directions on Civic models equipped with those features. User-support features include customizable settings and a customizable wallpaper display. Recommended wallpaper pixel dimensions are 234x480, 468x960, 702x1440 or 936x1920. The i-MID also displays warnings such as door ajar, SRS, parking brake and TPMS. The intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) is a versatile and handy warning and information readout that tracks and informs the driver of numerous important systems.

The i-MID information categories include:

•Audio system
•Warning screens
•Clock
•Digital odometer and digital trip meters (2)
•Average speed indicator
•Elapsed time indicator
•Average fuel economy indicators (2)
•Instant fuel-mileage indicator (except Civic Si)
•Miles-to-empty indicator
•Maintenance Minder™ system messages
•Exterior temperature indicator
•Customizable wallpaper
•Customizable settings
•Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® (not available on Civic DX, Civic LX and Civic HF)

Civic Hybrid: Driver-Feedback System
A unique feature of the Civic Hybrid i-MID is a driver-feedback system that monitors driving style and displays how it affects fuel efficiency. It also provides feedback so that adjustments can be made to operate the vehicle more efficiently. When the ignition is switched off, the Eco Scoring system keeps track of the driver's history. So aside from the money owners will save by increasing their mileage along with the satisfaction of helping to lower emissions, they'll also have bragging rights when they talk to other Civic Hybrid drivers. The heart of the system is the Eco Guide and the fuel-economy indicator. The Eco Guide is located in the intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID), and the fuel-economy indicator (Eco Assist) is located on either side of the digital speedometer. Together, these displays keep drivers constantly informed about how fuel efficiently they're driving. Also included in the i-MID is a unique hybrid power-flow meter.

Civic Si: Power Monitor
The Civic Si i-MID includes a Power Monitor screen that displays the engine's power output by percentage. Based on engine torque and rpm, the Power Monitor provides sporting oriented Si drivers with detailed real-time information on engine output. The clear graphic presentation of the engine's output can help drivers fine-tune their performance driving technique.

ECON Mode
Every 2012 Civic (except for Civic Si) is equipped with an ECON button, a feature that first appeared on the second-generation Insight. This button engages ECON mode, in which several operating characteristics of the vehicle are modified to further enhance fuel efficiency. The Drive-by-Wire throttle system provides more gradual response, and on automatic transmission-equipped models, the shift mapping is reconfigured to provide earlier upshifts. To save additional energy, the climate control's upper five fan speeds (of a total of six) are lowered incrementally and other climate control system characteristics are altered based on the conditions. See the Powertrain section for more information on ECON Mode.

Maintenance Minder Display
All Civic models have a Maintenance Minder system that tracks service related items based on vehicle usage. The Maintenance Minder system automatically indicates when to have standard service performed based on actual driving conditions (tracked by the ECU) and minimizes the guesswork related to whether the vehicle is being used in standard or severe use conditions for maintenance interval purposes. The display indicates when to change the oil, air cleaner, transmission fluid, spark plugs or coolant, as well as when to rotate the tires. On the Civic DX model, Maintenance Minder information appears in the trip meter display. In all other models it appears in the i-MID display.

Steering Wheel
The Civic's new 3-spoke steering wheel is a small diameter unit befitting the car's sporty character and accents the vehicle's quick-ratio steering. Civic Si steering wheels are wrapped in perforated leather for an even sportier feel. All models feature manual tilt and telescope steering wheel adjustment in order to better accommodate drivers of various sizes. Civic LX and models above now include audio and i-MID controls on the left side of the steering wheel, with four controls arranged on one ring – rather like the four points on a compass – to simplify the layout and provide for intuitive toggling between functions. All controls are positioned ergonomically where they are easy to reach and operate with minimal distraction for the driver. They also offer a pleasing tactile feel that reduces the need for the driver to confirm operation visually. The controls also indicate operation with visual cues on the i-MID. Civic LX and models above include cruise control buttons on the right side of the steering wheel for set, accelerate, decelerate and cancel. Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® control buttons are positioned on the lower left side of the steering wheel in all models, with the exception of Civic DX, Civic LX and Civic HF.

Interior Materials
Every tactile surface, from the interior door handles to the seat controls to the instrument panel, steering wheel, shift lever and electronic controls, latches and lids, are designed to be pleasing to the touch – and easy to operate. Interior panels feature a Honda patented new surface finish that has a rich look and changes in appearance with changing light angle. Cloth upholstery is standard in most Civic models. Civic EX-L and Civic Hybrid with leather both have standard leather seating surfaces.

Front Seats
For 2012, the front seats of the Civic have been completely redesigned with a more supportive seat construction that features reworked internal springing, structure and padding. Enhanced side bolstering improves comfort when cornering, and reshaped, narrower head restraints and thinner seatbacks help give the interior a roomier feel. Through careful engineering, each front seat is 4.4-pounds lighter than before – evidence of a comprehensive effort to reduce weight throughout the Civic. The Civic Coupe uses deeper side bolsters than the sedan, and the Si further increases lateral support in the both seatback and base.
Both front seats can be manually adjusted to recline along with move forward and back. The driver's seat features a manual height adjustment control with two inches total of vertical travel. A ratchet-style lever on the left side of the seat makes adjusting the height easy – just pull up or push down to move the seat in increments. To improve access into the rear seats on the Civic Coupe, the passenger seat has a one-touch seatback release and slide feature.

Rear Seats
The Civic's rear seats provide roomy comfort and functionality. For greater rear passenger comfort, the interior has a nearly flat rear floor, minimizing the typical tunnel that runs the length of the interior. The flat floor design provides considerably more foot room for middle passengers. To increase storage space, the seats can be folded down to expand the trunk's storage space and accommodate long, bulky items like a snowboard, bicycle or moving boxes. Civic DX, Civic LX and Civic HF models feature a one-piece folding rear seat. Civic EX and Si models feature a 60/40 split folding rear seat for enhanced people/cargo functionality. Trunk-mounted handles release the locks for the seatbacks so they can be folded conveniently. The Civic Hybrid and Civic Natural Gas have fixed rear seatbacks.

Interior Storage
A redesigned center storage console with a large armrest combines comfort with functionality. Inside the roomy storage compartment, all Civic models with the exception of the Civic DX have a USB port for easy connectivity. An auxiliary input jack is provided at the front of the center console, positioned in a large tray that's ideal for storing mobile devices or other small items. Two large cup holders are positioned in the center console, and each door panel has a built in storage bin and bottle holder. Coupe models have a bottle holder and storage bin integrated into each side of the rear cabin. For the Civic EX, Civic EX-L and the Civic Si Sedans, two more beverage holders are located in the rear seat center armrest. The instrument panel provides additional storage – a spacious traditional glove box, and an open compartment to the left side of the steering wheel.

Civic Hybrid: Automatic Climate Control
Civic Hybrid is equipped with an automatic climate control system. The driver simply sets the desired temperature and the system will take care of the rest. A second compressor is powered by a high voltage electric motor during idle-stop operation to ensure that the cabin temperature stays at its set level. Idle-stop operation is only enabled once the cabin has been sufficiently cooled. An electric water pump is also included for heating the cabin during idle stop.

Manual Climate Control
Civic LX and above models provide air conditioning as standard equipment. The front climate controls on the Civic are mounted centrally on the instrument panel for easy accessibility and feature rotary knobs for temperature settings and fan control. Push buttons allow control of airflow through the various vents inside the vehicle (i.e. defrost, heater, split level, etc.). A micron air-filtration system is capable of filtering nearly 100 percent of particulates over 8 microns in size (the size of most pollen). It can also filter out approximately 40 percent of particulates down to 0.3 microns (about the size of diesel emissions). The high capacity condenser with integral receiver drier runs the liquid refrigerant through a sub-cooling condenser, after the main condenser. The system is efficient and lightweight compared to traditional setups.

Progressive Instrument Illumination
The Civic's new instrument system uses progressive illumination to establish a "dialog" with the driver. When the door is opened, the instrument brightness turns on at 10 percent – a "welcome" of sorts for the driver. When the key is put in the ignition (encircled with an illuminated ring), the instrument illumination ramps up to 100 percent in one second. When the ignition is turned on, the illuminated instrument needles and enunciator lights come on, indicating all systems are go.

Audio Systems
Music plays an important role for most Civic buyers, so Honda engineers worked to provide the best audio systems in the compact class. The Civic LX Sedan is equipped with a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers. The CD player can also read CD-Rs loaded with Windows Media Audio (WMA) or MP3 audio files. Civic LX models and above present audio data on the new i-MID and also add a USB Audio Interface. All systems feature Speed-Sensitive Volume Control (SVC). With SVC, as the car speeds up and exterior noise increases, the audio system automatically raises the music's volume, and then lowers it as the car slows down. If desired, SCV can be deactivated at any time. Civic LX Coupe models have an upgraded audio system compared to the Sedan. The 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system features six speakers, including A-pillar-mounted tweeters. Civic EX Coupe, Civic EX-L Coupe and Civic Si models provide an even more impressive premium audio system, with 360 watts output from seven speakers, including an 8-inch subwoofer. Civic customers also can listen to music via an auxiliary input jack that enables them to plug their personal audio devices (such as an iPod® or MP3 player) directly into the Civic's audio system. The AUX jack is standard on Civic LX and above sedans and coupes.

USB Audio Interface
A USB Audio Interface is located in the center console of all models, with the exception of Civic DX. It can read flash drives and compatible digital music devices, such as iPods, that contain MP3 or WMA music files. It is important to note that only the iPod video, iPod nano and other 5th-generation or later iPods are compatible with this system. The iPod shuffle, mini, and older iPod models are not compatible. When an iPod is connected, the Honda logo will appear on the screen of the compatible iPod showing it is ready for use. The iPod or flash drive can then be controlled using the steering wheel-mounted or radio controls. Information such as song title, artist, album art and other information will appear on the Civic's LCD screen. The system will also charge the iPod while it is connected.

XM® Radio
XM® Radio is a standard feature for all Civic models equipped with the available navigation system and it provides more than 130 digital channels of programming with near CD-quality sound. With XM Radio, Civic owners can listen to their choice of music anywhere in the contiguous 48 states along with in select areas of Canada.

XM® programming includes channels devoted to music, sports, talk, traffic, weather, children's programming and entertainment. Of the 130 XM® channels, 69 are commercial-free. When the Civic's audio system plays XM®, the i-MID display screen shows the current station, song title, or artist's name.

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®
The Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® interface is designed to offer hands-free operation for many Bluetooth®-enabled mobile telephones. Standard on Civic EX, Civic EX-L, Civic Si, Civic Natural Gas and Civic Hybrid, the system wirelessly connects the driver's cell phone to the vehicle's audio system. This allows the driver to make or answer cell phone calls without removing hands from the steering wheel. The system is compatible with Bluetooth®-enabled cell phones that have the Hands Free Profile (HFP). A list of compatible phones can be found at handsfreelink.com or honda.com. HandsFreeLink® improvements for the 2012 Civic include full manual control, auto import of phonebook and call history, a dedicated Phone button on the head unit and six speed dials linked to radio preset keys (except for models equipped with navigation systems).

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® now enables audio files to be played through the vehicle's audio system wirelessly with a feature called Bluetooth® Audio. If an audio compatible device is paired it will be added as an auxiliary source on the i-MID's audio screen. This allows the Bluetooth® device's media to be played wirelessly by the audio system. Cell phone devices that support the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) 1.3 allow the display of metadata for artist, album and track name on the i-MID. The vehicle's audio controls for “skip forward” and “skip backward” allow for navigation from track to track.

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® is designed for easy use. After the driver completes a simple one-time "pairing" process to link the cell phone with the vehicle, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® can communicate wirelessly and securely with the driver's cell phone when the phone is within about 33 feet of the vehicle. Once the driver enters the vehicle, the phone can be stored in a pocket, briefcase, purse or a storage bin inside the vehicle's cabin as the call transfers information through the wireless telephone interface. Certain compatible cell phones can also transfer the cellular phonebook into the vehicle through the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system. After the cellular phonebook is transferred, calls can be made by making selections from the registered phonebook on the information screen.
Operational features include:

•Phone numbers of incoming calls are displayed on the i-MID
•Pressing the steering wheel-mounted "Pick up" button answers the call and mutes the audio system
•Caller is heard through the audio-system speakers
•An overhead microphone picks up the driver's voice while minimizing background noise and echoing
•Numbers with voice tags may be stored in the system's memory
•To make a call hands-free, the driver first activates the system using the steering wheel-mounted fingertip controls, then speaks a preset voice tag
•Numbers can also be dialed by speaking the telephone number (in Civics equipped with navigation system)
•Automatic import of phone book and call history
•Up to six different compatible mobile phones can be paired with the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system

Satellite-Linked Navigation System with Voice Recognition and FM Traffic
The latest generation of the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System is available on Civic EX, Civic EX-L, Civic Si, Civic Natural Gas and Civic Hybrid and features a 6.5-inch display and a fast 16 G B Flash Memory in place of the DVD-based system used previously. Turn-by-turn driving directions appear on the navigation screen, and on the new color i-MID display, which is positioned high in the instrument panel, close to the driver's line of sight. The system also includes standard FM traffic, which provides constantly updated on-screen traffic incident data for select cities that lets drivers choose faster, less congested routes to get to their destinations sooner. Unlike some other traffic data systems, FM traffic does not require a subscription and entails no extra charges. The navigation system features more than 10 million points of interest and is integrated with the audio system. The voice recognition is capable of recognizing and inputting numbers, street names and cities, in addition to more than 700 commands.

Honda navigation systems have long been recognized for their simple, intuitive operation and extensive on-board database. When navigating freeways, a split screen design enhances on-screen information with a "map view" and "3-D" route visualization of freeways simultaneously – which helps make navigation information easier to understand. And now with turn instructions displayed on the i-MID, situational awareness is further improved. The navigation system is integrated with the car's audio system, so driving instructions can be heard over the speaker system, and the voice recognition feature adds a hands-free realm of control to the navigation system.

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System uses Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) in combination with detailed information from the vehicle's Flash-based mapping system to pinpoint the vehicle's location and to provide a host of useful mapping and route guidance features. The antenna can utilize up to 12 satellites from a network of 24 global positioning satellites. If the antenna is obstructed by a tunnel, a parking garage or a tall building, an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle so that the map information remains current and reliable. The vehicle clock is independently controlled by GPS data, so when time zones are crossed while driving, the clock will automatically set itself to the current time.

The navigation system can be controlled by the driver through either the voice recognition system, the touch screen display, or by the joystick at the lower right corner of the screen. The voice recognition system works when the "talk" button (located on the steering wheel) is depressed. When spoken to, the system recognizes commands such as "find nearest gas station," or "find nearest ATM" and can also recognize street names. In the Civic Natural Gas, the available navigation system database includes the locations of compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling stations.

The 6.5-inch LCD touch screen allows the driver or front passenger to choose menu options or spell out a word (i.e. address, business name, place, etc.) through a touch-sensitive keypad. The keypad can be set to alphabetical or a QWERTY typewriter-style layout. Alternatively, the joystick can be used to highlight menu options or to highlight specific letters on the keypad to complete a word. A matte finish is used on the display to reduce glare and smudging.

For data storage, the system uses a 16 G B flash memory that contains information for the entire United States. Future updates to the navigation system can be made with a flash drive via the Civic's USB port inside the glove box. Flash drives with updated map data can be purchased on-line or by calling a toll free number.

Power Windows and Locks
Power windows are standard equipment on all Civic models. Civic LX and above models provide auto up and down operation on the driver's window. Power door locks with a customizable auto-locking feature are standard on Civic LX and above models. The auto door lock settings can be configured through the i-MID.

Keyless Entry System
Keyless entry is standard equipment on all Civic models except the DX. The wave key design has an integrated transmitter in the handle with lock, unlock, trunk open and panic buttons.

Engine Immobilizer
Complementing the keyless entry system is a standard engine-immobilizer system. A special electronically coded key prevents the car from being started-even if a mechanical duplicate of the key is used. A transponder, built into the key, signals the immobilizer control unit that the key is genuine. If the car is hot-wired, or an unauthorized key is used, the engine will not start.

12V DC Accessory Outlets
Civic Hybrid, Civic Si, Civic EX and Civic EX-L models provide two 12V DC accessory outlets. One is located on the lower portion of the instrument panel's center stack, the other is located inside the console for cell phones, etc. The Civic DX and Civic LX, Civic Natural Gas and Civic HF models feature a single 12V DC power outlet, located on the lower portion of the instrument panel's center stack.

All-New 2012 Honda Civic Si Adds Power and Features

Civic Si Coupe and Sedan models increase peak torque by 22 percent

04/20/2011 - TORRANCE, Calif.
The all-new 2012 Civic Si Coupe and Civic Si Sedan prioritize the performance potential of the Civic platform with a 201–horsepower i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine, a sport-tuned suspension and exclusive features for the enthusiast driver.

"The Civic Si represents the sporty flagship of the Civic series," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The broadened torque band of the 2012 model increases its appeal as a daily driver while adding a new dimension of mid-range performance."

More powerful than the 2.0-liter engine in the previous generation Civic Si, the new 2.4-liter engine produces 201 horsepower @ 7000 rpm and 170 lb-ft. torque @ 4300 rpm, an improvement of 4 horsepower and 31 lb-ft. of torque compared to the previous model. A sport-oriented six-speed manual transmission sends power to a helical-type limited-slip differential (LSD). The LSD helps the Civic Si accelerate powerfully and confidently when exiting corners as both wheels can deliver more equal torque distribution to the road compared to a conventional open-type differential.

Exclusive Civic Si exterior features include 17-inch alloy wheels with 215/45R17 tires (summer tires available on the coupe), a body-color deck lid spoiler with an LED center brake light, fog lights and a chrome exhaust finisher. Inside is an exclusive aluminum shift knob with leather, textured aluminum pedals and firmly bolstered perforated cloth sport seats with suede-like trim and red stitching. The steering wheel is leather-trimmed with red stitching. The new "intelligent" Multi-Information Display (i-MID) on the Civic Si includes an exclusive Power Monitor (as one of its screens) that can indicate the percentage of total horsepower generated by the engine. In addition, a Sequential Rev-limit Indicator located on the upper instrument panel can show when the i-VTEC high-lift camshaft profile is engaged and incrementally when the engine redline is approached and reached.

2.4-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder Engine and 6-Speed Manual Transmission
The Civic Si engine is designed to provide spirited acceleration with low exhaust emissions and good fuel economy for a compact vehicle. The 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine is constructed of lightweight aluminum and features a valvetrain system that incorporates dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder (16 valves total). A performance version of Honda’s i-VTEC system pairs Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC®) with Variable Timing Control™ (VTC™). The Civic Si i-VTEC system allows for the production of both low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower, which can be a distinct benefit compared to conventional engine designs with fixed valve timing. A high-volume intake manifold and a high-flow, low-backpressure exhaust system elevates the sporty demeanor and aggressive sound of the Civic Si. Dual balance shafts provide exceptional smoothness for a 4-cylinder engine.

Compared to the previous generation, the 20-percent-larger engine displacement contributes to peak power production at 7000 rpm instead of the previous engine’s 7800 rpm peak. The increased displacement also contributes to a substantial 22-percent increase in peak torque, now occurring at 4400 rpm, a substantial 1700 rpm lower than the previous engine’s 6100 rpm. The result is stronger and more immediate acceleration in a typical city driving environment.

The EPA-estimated city/highway/combined fuel economy rating1 of 22/31/25 miles per gallon is 1 mpg higher in the city and 2 mpg higher on the highway compared to the 2011 model. The Civic Si engine also meets stringent Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV-2) tailpipe emissions standards.
In keeping with the performance enthusiast mission of the vehicle, a 6-speed manual with a short-throw shifter is the only transmission available. Compact and lightweight, the transmission provides firm and direct shift action. The Civic Si also has a lightweight, high-capacity clutch utilizing a pedal assembly optimized for both low-effort actuation and a broad, smooth engagement band.

Coupe and Sedan Body Styles
Designed with a sleek windshield rake, a sweeping roofline and a new interpretation of the previous model’s "one-motion" profile, the lines of the 2012 Civic Sedan suggest a sophisticated and athletic appearance. The Civic Coupe with its shorter length and unique front and rear styling result in a more aggressive and dramatic styling demeanor. Both vehicles feature a low and wide stance that contributes to a distinctive visual presence, while thinner A-pillars stretch further toward the front of the vehicle than before to improve visibility and the perception of interior space. The C-pillars also stretch further toward the rear of the vehicle compared to the previous generation to better complete the flowing one-motion appearance. Adding to the extensive 2012 Civic color palette, the Civic Si Coupe and Civic Si Sedan models add the availability of a new Sunburst Orange Pearl paint color that change in appearance depending on sunlight conditions, further amplifying the dramatic bodylines.

The 2012 Civic embraces Honda’s tradition of making its vehicles fun to drive by continuing to use a fully independent suspension design, a premium and exceptional feature in the entry compact segment. The front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspensions are tuned for sporty driving fun, yet provide refined ride comfort. Ride and handling improvements are made possible by a 10-percent more rigid unit-body structure resulting from enhanced structural designs and increased use of high-strength steel (55 percent on the sedan compared to 50 percent on the previous model).

The Civic Si receives exclusive suspension tuning compared to the Civic Sedan and Coupe. Front and rear spring rates are increased, sport-tuned damper settings are used front and rear, and Civic Si models have a 0.4-inch lower ride height. Front and rear stabilizer bars are larger, measuring 18 mm in the front and 15 mm in the rear. The Civic Si Coupe and Civic Si Sedan have a 17.7:1 steering ratio, identical to the other 2012 Civic models. The Civic Si has 4-wheel disc brakes with11.8-inch vented front rotors (up from 10.3 inches on all other Civic models) and 10.2-inch solid rear rotors.

Safety
For safety, a wide variety of standard equipment includes Honda’s exclusive Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure for enhanced frontal collision energy management and vehicle-to-vehicle crash compatibility. ACE enhances frontal collision energy management through a network of load bearing structures in the front of the vehicle. Standard safety equipment includes VSA that integrates with the new Motion Adaptive EPS system; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; front side airbags with occupant position detection system (OPDS); side curtain airbags; and a 4-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.

Driver-Oriented Interior with Advanced Technology Features
Exclusive driver-oriented Civic Si Coupe and Civic Si Sedan interior features include firmly bolstered front sport seats and a special Civic Si interior color scheme with red ambient interior lighting. The front seats increase lateral support with firmer side bolsters compared to the other models. As with other Civic models, both of the Civic Si front seats manually recline, and the driver’s seat features a manual height adjustment control. Both Civic Si models likewise offer versatile 60/40 split fold-down rear seatbacks, which allow multiple configurations for passenger seating and cargo storage. A rear-seat center armrest with two beverage holders is included on the Civic Si.

The two-tier instrument panel in the Civic Si exclusively has red-backlit instrumentation. The new Sequential Rev-limit Indicator is located to the left of the speedometer display close to the driver’s line of sight, and also includes an i-VTEC indicator. The i-VTEC indicator illuminates when the VTEC system shifts from low to high-rpm cam profiles, and the rev-limit indicator’s array of six lights illuminate sequentially as engine speed rises. The first four lights are orange, and the last two are red.

The engine is producing maximum power when the second of the two red lights illuminates. The second red light indicates that the maximum rpm of the engine has been reached. An additional feature within the i-MID is the Power Monitor screen, which displays a graphic of the engine and its power output as a percentage ranging between 0 and 100 percent. An instant fuel-mileage indicator also lets drivers keep tabs on fuel economy on a real-time basis.

Both Civic Si models include an AM/FM/CD Premium Audio system with 360 watts total of power and seven speakers, including a pair of front tweeters and an 8-inch subwoofer located in the rear window shelf. The system includes WMA/MP3 audio-file reading capability, on-screen CD and album information, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, speed-sensitive volume control (SVC), XM® Radio capability, an auxiliary input jack, a USB audio interface for compatible devices and Bluetooth® audio streaming. In addition, the standard Bluetooth HandsFreeLink® telephone interface is designed to work with compatible mobile phones. Mobile phone audio files can also be streamed wirelessly.

The available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System has a 6.5-inch display and 16 GB of flash memory in place of the DVD-based system used in the previous generation. The new system allows for simple, intuitive operation and provides more than 10 million points of interest. The navigation system can now overlay FM Traffic data on its maps, a free public resource available in participating major metropolitan areas for traffic congestion, incidents and construction zones.

The voice activation is capable of recognizing numbers, street names and city names, and it can control the audio system.
