General Motors CEO Akerson writes a check for $1 million to Habitat for Humanity Detroit

DETROIT — General Motors Co. CEO Dan Akerson and his wife, Karin, today donated $1 million to start a Habitat for Humanity Detroit initiative called Leaders to ReBuild Detroit, GM spokesman Greg Martin confirmed.

"Dan has a long track record of supporting strong communities both in the greater Washington, D.C., area and certainly now that he has moved to Detroit," Martin said in an interview. "This is just one more example of Dan rolling up his sleeves and getting actively involved in the communities where he lives and works."
Dan Akerson maintains residences in both Detroit and Washington.

Martin said Akerson has been involved with other Detroit-area events and organizations, including the Capuchin Soup Kitchen and Karmanos Cancer Institute. He also has matched UAW donations to the Wounded Warrior Project for wounded war veterans, Martin said.

A press release by Habitat for Humanity Michigan said the three-year, multimillion-dollar initiative is designed to engage Detroit's corporate leaders in revitalizing the city.

The project will serve at least 500 families in a Detroit neighborhood known as the Morningside Commons by 2014, Habitat for Humanity said.

As part of Habitat Michigan's statewide $225 million campaign to provide housing, 200 families also will participate in financial literacy training, home ownership workshops and community security initiatives provided by partnering organizations.

The idea for a public gift from the Akersons sprung from a conversation last year at a meeting of the American Society of Corporate Executives, attended by Dan Akerson and Home Depot CEO Frank Blake, whose wife, Liz Blake, is general counsel of Habitat for Humanity, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Akerson told the Free Press that the donation to the initiative also would look at stabilizing public safety in the Detroit neighborhood.

"The idea is to galvanize resources around the two schools that are in the area so we can create safe pathways to schools," he told the newspaper.

The report also said the General Motors Foundation has been resurrecting its philanthropic efforts for the past two years, most notably with a $27.1 million pledge to help boost graduation rates at seven southeast Michigan high schools.

U.S. Army unveils GM-made fuel-cell military vehicles

The U.S. Army unveiled a fleet of General Motors-made hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles in Hawaii as part of that state's efforts to cut down its use of fossil fuels and its dependence on non-renewable energy.

All U.S. military branches will test the vehicles to find out the effectiveness of using hydrogen fuel cells as a transportation source. Hydrogen proponents view fuel cell powertrains as optimal because they can provide driving ranges similar to conventional vehicles without the fossil fuel emissions, but H2 vehicles are also very expensive. Two years ago, GM and Hawaii's Gas Co. said they would lead an effort to build as many as 25 hydrogen fueling stations throughout the state by 2015.

Hawaii, which gets more than 95 percent of its energy from imported fossil fuels, is taking a leading role in advanced-powertrain adoption because of the high costs of delivering gasoline to the state. The U.S. Energy Department and the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is investing an estimated $4.5 million as part of an effort to reduce Hawaii's transportation fuel consumption by two-thirds over the next two decades.

Before we leave the Academy Awards completely behind for another year, General Motors wants us to remember the roles that made stars out of cars.

"The high-profile association with a blockbuster and classic movies gives Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac wonderful exposure to those not familiar with the brand," said Steve Tihanyi, GM's general director for branded entertainment and marketing alliances. "We are always looking for unique ways to humanize and expose our vehicles to new consumers and there will always be a certain 'cool' factor in starring on the big screen."

Sure, you saw the Chevrolet Camaro in the starring role as Bumblebee in three Transformers movies. But don't forget these other star turns for other GM vehicles through the years.

American Graffiti (1973) – In the coming-of-age movie that helped launch the Hollywood careers of Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard and Harrison Ford, a 1955 Chevrolet One-Fifty and 1958 Chevrolet Impala were an ode to the car culture of the 1960s.

Smokey & the Bandit (1977) – The "Bandit," played by Burt Reynolds, is a maverick racecar driver behind the wheel of a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am. The movie led to two sequels and for Pontiac's 50th anniversary, 15,567 special Black and Gold edition Trans Ams were created.

Ghostbusters (1984) – In the 1984 comedy, a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Ambulance is introduced to audiences worldwide as, "a hunk of junk." Saved by Ray Stantz, played by Dan Aykroyd, the car is converted into the ultimate ghostbusting machine – the Ectomobile

Rain Man (1988) – After inheriting a 1949 Buick Roadmaster Convertible from his father, Tom Cruises' character, Charlie Babbitt, and his brother Raymond, played by Dustin Hoffman, spend the majority of Rain Man behind the wheel of the classic Buick that helps bring the two together.

Demolition Man (1993) – Many of the cars in the 1993 action, sci-fi movie starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock were GM concept and prototypes vehicles, including a 1991 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept, 1992 GM Ultralite and GM Lean Machine. The 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 that was used in the movie is currently on display at the GM Heritage Center.

The Matrix Reloaded (2003) – In the sequel to the 1999 blockbuster, the Cadillac CTS gets into the action serving as the vehicle of Trinity, Neo and Morpheus. The GM Heritage Collection houses the actual vehicle used during filming, complete with bullet holes.

DETROIT — Auto sales are growing so fast that Detroit can barely keep up.
Three years after the U.S. auto industry nearly collapsed, sales of cars and trucks are surging. Sales could exceed 14 million this year, above last year's 12.8 million.

The result: Carmakers are adding shifts and hiring thousands of workers around the country. Carmakers and parts companies added more than 38,000 jobs last year, reaching a total of 717,000. And automakers have announced plans to add another 13,000 this year, mostly on night shifts.

But there's a downside. The newfound success is straining the factory network of the Detroit automakers, as well as the companies that make the thousands of parts that go into each vehicle. This could lead to shortages that drive up prices.

And it also has auto executives in a quandary. They got into trouble in the first place largely because their costs were too high. Now, they fear adding too many workers.

Ford, for instance, is "squeezing every last component, transmission, engine out of the existing brick and mortar," says Jim Tetreault, vice president of North America manufacturing.

Still, the surge in hiring bolsters the argument of those who supported the federal bailout of General Motors and Chrysler in 2008. The bailout has been a major issue in the days leading up the Michigan Republican Party primary this Tuesday. GOP front runner Mitt Romney opposed the bailout, which was supported by then-President George W. Bush and later by President Barack Obama.

And the hiring is good news for communities around the country that saw hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs disappear. Starting in 2005, GM, Ford and Chrysler closed 28 factories and eliminated 88,000 jobs. Parts companies cut another 234,000.

Now, if sales hit 15 million by 2015, as some experts predict, the three Detroit automakers could hire another 20,000 people, predicts Sean McAlinden, chief economist for the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich.

"You can only squeeze so much out of the same amount of people," says Itay Michaeli, an auto analyst at Citi Investment Research.

Laurie Schmald Moncrieff, president of a small parts-manufacturing company near Flint, Mich., says when demand for auto parts collapsed, she shifted production to parts for companies in green energy, aerospace and defense.

Now, automakers and other parts suppliers have her on speed dial, trying to line up everything from fuel pump parts to tools that make hoses. She just added six workers and may hire another five. "I see tremendous growth coming in the near-term," she says.

Yet like many parts suppliers, she's having trouble finding people with the skills to run machinery in her plant.
The hiring binge couldn't have happened at a better time for Michigan. Many of the new auto jobs came around the Great Lakes where the Detroit Three have most of their factories. New jobs with auto companies don't pay as well as the old ones. Under union contracts, companies can pay new hires around $16 per hour, a little more than half the pay of longtime workers.

But in a state where unemployment was above 14 percent just three years ago, any jobs are welcome. And Michigan is not the only region to benefit. Ford is adding positions in Louisville, Ky., Chicago and near Kansas City, Mo. Chrysler is adding jobs in Belvidere, Ill., and General Motors is hiring at plants in Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas and New York.

Foreign carmakers are also shifting production to the U.S. because of higher sales and the weak dollar, which cuts the profits they get from selling vehicles exported to America. Nissan is adding workers in Tennessee. Toyota just hired staff at a new plant in Blue Springs, Miss. Honda is hiring in Alabama and Ohio. Hyundai and Kia plants in Alabama and Georgia are running flat-out but can't meet demand for some models such as the Hyundai Sonata and Elantra.

The sales rebound comes with risks that are familiar to Detroit. Crank up production too much and carmakers have to sell vehicles at deep discounts. Boost production too little, and companies could run short of vehicles such as pickup trucks. And even if they find the right balance now, automakers are leery of raising long-term costs by adding plants and workers.

Six years ago, Detroit's automakers were losing billions, in part because they had too many plants and workers. And union contracts forced them to pay workers even if plants were shut down. So automakers kept the factories running regardless of whether vehicles would sell in order to cover expenses. They built too many cars and trucks and sold them cheap, sometimes at a loss.
Now, they're doing everything they can to keep costs under control.

Growth is putting the squeeze on Hyundai and Kia factories. But the affiliated companies will build as many vehicles as possible at two U.S. plants before constructing a new factory. John Krafcik, Hyundai's U.S. CEO, says the first choice is to find areas inside the plants that are slowing the assembly lines and fix them, "because plants are expensive."

GM also will try to handle growth by stretching factories, says North American President Mark Reuss. But he thinks the company will have to hire more workers if sales this year reach 13.5 million or beyond.
Auto factories in North America will reach 90 percent of their capacity if sales hit 14 million, says Michael Robinet, managing director of IHS Automotive Consulting, which forecasts auto production.
The lack of factories, though, could cause automakers to run short of pickup trucks this year, says McAlinden.

Detroit automakers, which dominate truck sales, had far too many pickup factories just seven years ago. They have closed eight truck plants since 2005, removing the ability to build 2.25 million pickups a year. With only nine North American pickup plants left, they may have cut too much, McAlinden says.
Last year Americans bought 1.8 million pickups, an 11 percent increase over 2010, as the economy improved and small and large businesses began replacing their aging vehicles. Pent-up demand is fueling the sales. The average age of a truck on U.S. roads has reached a record 11 years.

If sales increase as projected, companies also could run short of compact cars and small SUVs.
It adds up to what could be a challenging but profitable year for the industry, says Schmald Moncrieff, who runs the Michigan parts factory.

"A lot of things are going to start breaking loose all at once," she says.

Honda Pays Homage to Famous Film in Super Bowl XLVI Commercial

quarter Super Bowl commercial to promote the all-new 2012 Honda CR-V.

"Matthew's Day Off" is part of an integrated, multiplatform advertising campaign that began earlier this month to support the launch of the all-new Honda CR-V. The campaign encourages the active, hip Gen-Y audience transitioning between their carefree twenties and their more focused thirties to conquer their aspirations by completing their own "Leap List."

To build anticipation for Honda's Super Bowl commercial an eight-second teaser, "Coming Soon," was loaded onto YouTube on Jan. 26 and amassed nearly four million views. In addition, Honda fans will get a sneak peek of the Super Bowl ad on Honda's Facebook page and Google+ page, which was just launched last week. Fans are encouraged to use the hashtag #dayoff online when talking about Honda's Super Bowl commercial. Momentum will continue the week after the game with several large portal takeovers featuring "Matthew's Day Off."

It might have been a worthy successor to the Pontiac Vibe – a stylish, youth-marketed crossover – but alas, the GMC Granite may never come to be. Jim Federico, GM's small car exec, told Automotive News that the Granite concept from the 2010 Detroit auto show isn't headed into production.

Granite was rumored to be green-lighted for production, and would have been based on the Chevrolet Cruze platform, to compete with vehicles like the Scion xB and Kia Soul. We liked the concept when we saw it in 2010, but felt that the Granite was perhaps a bad match for GMC, given its small size.

While AN says Federico offered no further details, we imagine GM figures the forthcoming Buick Encore crossover probably doesn't need the competition in Buick/GMC showrooms.

2012: The Year Of Nothing

Canyon: production of the present-generation midsize truck will cease by mid-2012 when the Shreveport, LA plant is shut down.
Terrain Denali Debut: coming to market in 2012 for the same model year, the range-topping Denali version of the Terrain will don many a chrome accent, as this tester aims to cover up. We’ve also received several tips from sources with unproven track records claiming that this could be the first Denali crossover to be differentiated by an engine rather than an increased amount of body bling and a higher price tag. We hope to see the 3.6 liter LFX in the compact/midsize CUV.

2013: The Year Of Granite, Acadia & A Midsize SUV

Canyon: even though GM has (finally) confirmed that the next-generation Chevy Colorado will make its way to the States, it has not announced any plans for a GMC version. As such it’s unclear whether the new truck will don both the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon nameplates, but we think that GMC will get a version of the truck in 2013. For the sanity of truck fans all over North America, we hope that the Chevy and GMC midsizers will be differentiated by more than a simple badge engineering job. Engines in the international-market Colorado include the 2.5 and 2.8 liter Duramax turbo diesels making as much as 346 lb.-ft. of torque (in the 2.8 model). Furthermore, new CAFE requirements will most likely result in the discontinuation of the range of outdated powertrains in the current model, including the large yet not very power-dense fours, fives, and eights.

Granite Debut: having been greelit for production, the subcompact crossover will bow in 2012 for the 2013 model year. The Delta II-based model will share its platform with the Cruze and Verano, although it will ride on a shortened wheelbase. Staying true to the concept, it will also have Dutch doors and have a pickup variant that was shown as the Granite CPU. The concept was powered by a 1.4 liter turbocharged Ecotec engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission — the same powertrain as in the Chevy Cruze. The production version may get the 2.0 liter turbocharged Ecotec or GM’s new 2.5 liter naturally aspirated Ecotec.

Acadia Overhaul: expected in late 2012 or early 2013 for the 2013 model year, the next-generation Acadia will switch to the Theta Premium architecture shared with the Cadillac SRX. However, recent tips to GM Authority have suggested that this Acadia will ride on a long-wheelbase variant of the Theta that has not yet been released, suggesting that the new version may not actually be that different dimensionally from the outgoing model. A turbocharged or naturally-aspirated 3.0 liter as well as a naturally-aspirated 3.6 liter LFX will likely power the new Acadia.

Midsize SUV Debut: expected for the 2013 model year, the new vehicle will be based on GM’s global midsize SUV platform shared with the recently-debuted Chevrolet Colorado. This vehicle, whose name has not yet been decided within General Motors (and will most likely not be called Canyon), will be GMC’s version of the Chevy TrailBlazer but will be heavily differentiated, containing squared styling to the Blazer’s more rounded shape. Engine choices are currently unknown, but the global Chevy Colorado will utilize GM’s new turbo-diesel four cylinders, available in 2.5 and 2.8 liter displacements. It’s unlikely that GM will offer turbodiesels on family- or personal-use SUV, so the 3.0 liter LF1 or 3.6 liter LFX are the most likely contenders to power the vehicle.

2014: The Year Of Yukon And Sierra

Sierra 1500 Redesign & Re-Engineer: expected in the second half of 2013 for the 2014 model year, the next-generation Sierra will utilize an updated architecture and will sport significant powertrain improvements to increase fuel economy while not sacrificing capability. A six cylinder turbo and optional 8-speed transmission are likely, but we wouldn’t discount a naturally-aspirated six-banger under the hood as the base engine. The styling will be greatly differentiated from the Silverado platform mate and a number of GMC-exclusive convenience features are also in the cards. According to sources, “interesting trim levels” are being discussed that have never been seen before. A specialty off-road-oriented variant, along the lines of the Sierra All-Terrain HD Concept, will come a year or two after the debut of the “regular” Sierra.

Yukon Redesign & Re-Engineer: the truck-based full size SUVs will bow in 2013 as 2014 model year vehicles. The Yukon and larger Yukon XL will ride on an updated platform and share more sheet metal with the Sierra pickup truck than the current generation. More importantly, the styling will have a high degree of differentiation compared to the Suburban — the Yukon’s platform mate. In an effort to improve fuel economy in a wide range of driving scenarios, an eight-speed transmission will be utilized and GM’s four-mode hybrid system will replace the current two-mode setup in the optional Hybrid trim.
2015 & Beyond

Sierra Heavy Duty: the best-in-class heavy duty truck was restyled and re-engineered for the 2011 model year. Expect updates to the heavy duty to follow the release of the Sierra 1500 by a year or two, due for the 2014 or 2015 model year. Details are scarce, but a new version of the Duramax Diesel is in the works.

Savana: a new Savana full-size van will come several years later. There have been rumblings of GM modernizing the ~~traditional~~ ~~classic~~ old vans by moving them to a single global vehicle based on the Opel Movano, just as Ford is doing with the T-Series and its Transit line in Europe.

Because GM has allocated hundreds of millions of dollars to redesign its full-size pickups, we asked renowned automotive illustrator Mark Stehrenberger to take a stab at what these trucks could look like when they debut around 2013.

First up, the next-gen GMC Sierra 1500 half-ton.

We're told by sources that the Sierra will look significantly more different from the Chevrolet Silverado than it does today. The new Sierra features the new 3-bar grille that we've seen in spy shots of the 2011 GMC Sierra Heavy Duty pickups -- which officially debut next month at the NTEA Work Truck Show in St. Louis -- and styling cues from the blocky "urban-industrial' GMC Granite small people-mover concept that debuted at the Detroit auto show last month. A sleeker exterior is expected to contribute to improved gas mileage. GM is also studying whether automatically opening and closing the grille inlets of its full-size pickups could improve aerodynamics and mileage.

Powertrain improvements are expected to include wide use of direct injection across the Sierra's engine lineup including, we're told, a (maybe 7.0-liter?) new large-displacement V-8 gas engine. GM's next-generation full-size hybrid technology will also arrive by 2013, with more-efficient, stronger electric motors and batteries, giving the gas-electric trucks up to 50% better towing capacity.

Like their 2011 heavy-duty brothers, the next-generation Silverado and Sierra light-duty pickups will ride on all-new frames. Expect the HD pickups to receive all new sheetmetal that's similar to the light-duty pickups.

How strongly Honda rebounds from a terrible 2011 will depend heavily on consumer reaction to the 2013 Accord coupe revealed Tuesday at the North American International Auto Show.
Honda has sold 11 million Accords in the U.S. since 1976, but its sales dropped 16.6% in 2011 to a total of 235,625 as the company contended with inventory shortages caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Over the course of 2011, Honda slashed 200,000 vehicles from its global production schedule.
This year, said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda, Honda expects to sell more than 300,000 Accords in the U.S.
"To say the past year has been one of tremendous challenge is an understatement," Mendel said. "We're here to serve notice to the competitors that Honda is again firing on all cylinders."
But the competitive landscape is different, especially in the midsize sedan segment, from 2007 when Honda introduced the outgoing generation of the Accord.
The Accord is facing steep competition from the Hyundai Sonata/Kia Optima, Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, and Volkswagen Passat and soon will contend with the redesigned Chevrolet Malibu.
The Sonata offered a more daring look. The 2012 Camry, launched last fall, isn't as forward looking from a styling perspective, but even the old version was the best-selling car in the U.S. again.
On Monday, Ford unveiled an all-new Fusion with an aggressive-looking grille. The Fusion goes into production this fall.
The styling of the 2013 Accord is an evolution of the current model, with a rising beltline and subtle rear fender flares. Honda received heavy criticism for the conservative styling of the 2012 Civic and quickly revised certain aspects of its exterior late in the fall.
The coupe's size doesn't change much versus the current model, but the 2013 sedan will be smaller and of lighter weight than the model it replaces.
Both the redesigned coupe and sedan are to go on sale this fall.
This year, Honda is targeting a 23.5% sales increase for its mainstream Honda brand and a 40% sales increase for Acura in the U.S.
Sporting Honda's first direct-injection engine for improved fuel economy and power, the new Accord coupe will look almost exactly like the concept introduced Tuesday when it reaches dealerships in the fall. A plug-in hybrid model is to follow next winter.
The direct-injected 181-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder will be paired with a continuously variable transmission.
The 3.5-liter V6 Accord will be the first Honda sedan with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Honda also said it is working on a plug-in Accord hybrid that will have a city driving range of 10 to 15 miles and top speed of 62 m.p.h. on battery power. A 2.0-liter gasoline engine will power the hybrid the rest of the time.
Charging the battery will take less than four hours with 120 volts and about 90 minutes with 240V.
Mendel declined to say when the plug-in Accord will go on sale. Honda offered a gasoline-electric hybrid version of the Accord last decade, but discontinued it in 2007 because of slow sales.
The Accord hybrid cost about $8,000 more than its gas-only counterpart and only got a few more miles per gallon.
Mendel said the plug-in hybrid will feature a completely new battery system and motor, but he declined to name the type of battery or the supplier.
New safety systems on the 2013 Accord include lane-departure and forward-collision warnings.
Honda is not yet releasing pricing for the new Accord.

Honda Working On Plug-In Hybrid Accord For This Winter

The 2013 edition of the Honda Accord will bring a plug-in hybrid model to one of North America's best-selling cars.

Officially announced at the North American International Auto Show, the plug-in Accord features a dual-motor set-up — including a 120 kW electric motor — that continuously moves through three different driving modes to achieve the best fuel efficiency possible: all-electric, gasoline-electric, and direct-drive.

When driving in all-electric mode the Accord has a range of 10-15 miles. It also includes a six kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery that takes four hours to charge using a 120 volt outlet and just 1.5 hours to charge when using a 240 volt charger.

Last year Honda unveiled a hybrid version of the CR-Z and this year it's expected to launch an electric version of the Fit.

The Honda Accord plug-in hybrid is set to come to North America towards the end of 2012.

Seven modified 2012 Civic Si Coupes and Sedans are featured prominently in the Honda booth at the 2011 SEMA Show, which opens today. The all-new 2012 Civic Si Coupe and Civic Si Sedan emphasize the performance potential of the Civic lineup and represent great platforms for vehicle personalization. Several significant vehicles are being unveiled at the show, including a 2012 Civic Si Coupe equipped with a limited-edition Honda Factory Performance™ (HFP™) package, the Honda Performance Development, Inc. (HPD) Compass360 Racing HPD 2012 Civic Si Coupe Racecar, the Accord Coupe HFP Concept and several vehicles equipped with Honda Genuine Accessories.

"The Honda Civic was instrumental in the first import-tuner movement in the U.S. during the ‘80s," said Bruce Smith, vice president of Service and Technical Operations for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The all-new Civic Si builds on that proud history by offering inspiring performance, improved fuel economy and a great platform for personalization."

Show-goers will get the first look at the 2012 Civic Si Coupe fitted with a limited-edition HFP package. Limited to only 500 complete kits and on sale today at Honda dealers in the U.S., the package includes: high-performance springs, reducing ride height by 15 mm; high-performance dampers tuned for enhanced road handling and decreased body roll; 18x7 inch HFP Alloy Wheels; full HFP aerodynamic body kit; HFP carpet floor mats; red ambient interior illumination; and, HFP emblems. All of the painted parts will come color-matched to each of the seven available Civic Si Coupe colors.

After unveiling the Compass360 Racing HPD 2012 Civic Si Coupe Racecar, HPD provided details about its new racing performance parts program for the all-new Civic Coupe. Earlier this year, HPD began sales of Civic bodies-in-white, also on display. For builders of racecars, starting their build with a body-in-white represents significant cost and labor savings when compared to the purchase and conversion of a fully-equipped production car. Sales of the body-in-white began in July, and HPD has delivered a number to licensed race teams thus far, priced at $3,500 each. Additionally, HPD will soon offer HPD-designed parts and branded racing components for the new Civic through the Honda Racing Line. These racing parts are tailored for use in the SCCA World Challenge and Grand Am's Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. They will be available early in 2012, and full details and pricing will be available at that time.

Combining the expertise of HPD and the styling and performance history of HFP, the Accord Coupe V6 HFP Concept features a full suite of currently-available HFP components. HPD guided the creation of the "concept," which includes a supercharger and performance air intake and exhaust systems. Building upon a stock 3.5-liter V6 engine, the supercharged engine is estimated to produce 335 hp and 285 ft. lbs of torque (up 64 hp and 34 ft. lbs vs. stock car). This vehicle was modified to demonstrate the performance potential of the Accord V6 coupe and to gauge consumer interest. Honda has no current production plans for the concept.

Sporting available Honda Genuine Accessories, the 2012 Civic Si Sedan shows that performance and style can come with four doors. It features 18x7 inch HFP alloy wheels, all-season floor mats, trunk tray, cargo net, cargo hook and splash guards. All Honda Genuine Accessories, including HFP components, offer a 3-year/36,000 mile warranty like the Civic itself, if they are purchased and installed at the time of new vehicle purchase, and are engineered to be fully compatible with each Honda vehicle.

Nestled amongst two previously-seen Honda-modified CR-Z sport hybrids, the HPD CR-Z Hybrid R Concept and the CR-Z with MUGEN accessories, is a stand-alone HPD CR-Z engine concept equipped with a supercharger. This 1.5-liter engine concept builds upon HPD 's experience with the turbocharged HPD CR-Z Racer that competed at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill last year and represents HPD 's continued exploration of the performance potential of the CR-Z.

Reaching out to the import community, Honda invited three independent vehicle tuners to build and display their Civic Si concepts at the SEMA Show. Tuners were asked to push the limits of performance and style with their builds, and the vehicles on display demonstrate the personalized potential of the Si Coupe and Sedan. Following last year 's amazing CR-Z build, Bisimoto Engineering delivered a 1004 hp version of the Civic Si Coupe. American Honda Motor Co., Inc., today announced the installation of its largest commercial solar-cell demonstration project in the United States, at Honda Performance Development (HPD), Inc., the company's advanced motorsports engineering facility in Santa Clarita, CA. The 100-kilowatt, 800-cell array of thin-film CIGS solar panels, manufactured by Honda Soltec Co., Ltd., are installed on the roof, carport, and loading dock canopy at the headquarters of HPD, where the company develops engine technology for the IZOD IndyCar series, the American Le Mans Series, the Le Mans Series in Europe, and other racing programs. The Honda solar array complements other unique environmental technologies installed at the facility, as well as HPD's plans for "green racing" motorsports programs. Honda

Soltec is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Honda based in Kumamoto, Japan.
The solar demonstration project is one of Honda's largest to date, providing power to several areas of the HPD research-and-development campus, while reducing energy loads and CO2 emissions. Energy produced by the solar array is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 64 metric tons annually, according to Honda estimates.

The system features a solar tracking system that allows some panels to follow the path of the sun and is designed to power an electric vehicle charger, demonstrating Honda's vision for a sustainable energy management system that incorporates Honda solar cell and electric vehicle technologies. Energy output will be monitored in real-time through an internet-based monitoring system.

"The installation of Honda Soltec solar panels along with an electric vehicle charging station at one of our most advanced Honda facilities in the United States represents a big step for us in our solar product development," said Mike Hodge, manager of Honda Home Energy for the Power Equipment Division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "What we learn from this new project at HPD will provide real-world data and feedback on the use of Honda solar cells in a typical commercial application."

Using a thin-film compound of copper, indium, gallium and selenium (CIGS), Honda's next-generation solar cell requires less raw material and 40 percent less energy, and related CO2 emissions, to manufacture compared to conventional crystal silicon solar cells. Earlier this year, Honda Soltec introduced a new CIGS cell with a smaller solar panel design, adding to more efficient installation in limited spaces on a wide range of roof shapes. The conversion efficiency of the new solar cell module is expected to exceed 13 percent, ranking it among the world's most efficient CIGS-based thin-film solar cells.

In Japan, where Honda first began selling its CIGS solar cells in October 2008, Honda is utilizing Honda Soltec solar cells in 15 facilities, including most of its factories and major R&D facilities, with a total output of 2.5 megawatts.

HPD is American Honda's North American racing development and sales organization, operating out of a 123,000-square-foot building in Santa Clarita, CA. The two-story structure houses comprehensive motorsports research and development operations, including design, development engineering, prototype and production parts manufacturing, race-engine preparation and rebuilding areas, and a material analysis laboratory. Recently, HPD has undertaken a number of "green racing" motorsports initiatives, including developing and campaigning hybrid and alternative-fuel Honda race vehicles.

In the area of green-building technology, HPD already utilizes a thermal energy storage system that employs chillers to produce ice during off-peak evening hours, as well as using energy-efficient lighting fixtures with motion sensing capability, and a drip-type landscape irrigation system.

Also debuting at HPD is the award-winning GE WattStation* electric vehicle charger that can be used to charge the Honda Fit EV battery electric vehicle, set to be introduced to customers in the U.S. and Japan in 2012. The Fit EV is designed to meet the daily driving needs of the average metropolitan commuter and incorporates the same five-passenger layout found in the popular Fit hatchback.

The GE WattStation is an easy-to-use electric vehicle (EV) charger designed to help accelerate the adoption of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) by significantly decreasing time needed for vehicle charging. The WattStation can charge an electric vehicle in as little as four to eight hours. Its smart grid-enabled technology also can help utility companies manage the impact of EVs on the local and regional grids.

Honda's Alabama factory rolls out 262,000 vehicles in 2011

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Honda's Alabama factory produced 262,047 vehicles this year, a figure that was slightly lower than the previous year, the company said today.

Preliminary production results show that the Honda plant in Lincoln turned out 130,442 Odyssey minivans; 118,405 Pilot SUVs; and 13,200 Ridgeline pickups in 2011. The plant has ceased production for the year, so the figures represent a total for 2011.

The 3.5 million-square-foot facility in Talladega County produced about 10,000 more vehicles in 2010. Production at all of Honda's North American factories were reduced in mid-2011 after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan, disrupting the automaker's supply operations. Later in the year, production was slowed because of flooding in Thailand, which also caused disruptions.

"Honda experienced unprecedented challenges in 2011from natural disasters both in Japan and here in Alabama," Tom Shoupe, Honda's Alabama president, said in a statement. "But through all the difficulties, our associates embodied Honda's challenging spirit in working as one team to build high quality products for our customers."

This year, Honda's Alabama operation announced investments totaling $275 million to support the addition of the Acura MDX luxury sport utility vehicle to its production lineup in 2013.

The investments also will support an increase in annual production capacity to 340,000 vehicles and engines by 2013. The company also announced plans to hire at least 140 production workers, adding to its total of 4,000.

Honda released some details of its Tokyo Motor Show concept cars three weeks ago, and now we can see what they look like in person.

For U.S. buyers in particular, the most important of them is the Honda Advanced Cruiser-X (AC-X) Concept, a mid-size sedan that resembles nothing so much as a freshened version of Honda's low-production FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle.

Among all of Honda's concepts--and this being the Tokyo show, there were plenty of wacky ones to go round from almost every maker--the AC-X stands out because its technology previews a plug-in hybrid model of the next Honda Accord sedan.

To be launched as a 2013 or 2014 model, the new Accord will offer a new full hybrid system using a pair of motor-generators that let it run entirely on electricity at low speeds.

That's in contrast to the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system used in all Honda hybrids to date, including the new 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid compact sedan, the CR-Z two-seat hybrid sport coupe, and the freshened 2012 Honda Insight subcompact hatchback.

The AC-X Concept shows off a version of the new hybrid with a larger battery pack that can be plugged into wall current to recharge it, similar to the 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid that'll arrive at dealers next spring--one of the pair of new Priuses that won our Best Car To Buy 2012 Award.

According to Honda, drivers can select an "engine drive mode" with more performance, which uses the engine more, or an "automatic drive mode" which maximizes electric propulsion and more relaxed driving--most likely meaning slower acceleration.

The engine is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder unit, paired to Honda's new hybrid drive system, which has been developed for larger and heavier vehicles. That means not only mid-size sedans like the Accord, but also heavier crossovers and minivans.

Honda expects to introduce a production car using its new hybrid system next year. Meanwhile, here's what the AC-X Concept looked like in Tokyo.

2013 Honda Accord Coupe Concept to debut at Detroit Auto Show

The Japan-based automobile company, Honda Motor recently announced its plans for the upcoming Detroit International Motor Show. Honda has decided to introduce its 2013 Accord Coupe Concept, joining other new car concepts that are lined for the North American Auto Show to be held during January next year.

The company as expected chose not to reveal details about its new Honda Accord Coupe Concept; however, it has been confirmed that the new model will be a two-door coupe. Moreover, the car maker also said that the next generation Honda Accord Coupe Concept is slated to go on sale by fall next year.

The 2013 Honda Accord Coupe Concept will be the ninth generation model under its best-selling Accord brand. Although details about the new coupe concept have been kept under wraps, the 2013 Honda Accord Coupe Concept is predicted to be the first among many new Honda Accords expected in the future.

Since its inception during 1976, when the first generation Honda Accord was introduced, the model has pioneered in terms of performance, styling, comfort and safety. Till date, Accord is valued as one of the best-selling cars in the United States of America. Moreover, the 2012 edition of Honda Accord was awarded with the highest initial quality in its segment in the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 Initial Quality Study (IQS).

The company has confirmed that the ninth generation Honda Accord will also be available in plug-in hybrid option, which will serve as a convenient alternative for short trips and routine driving of around 15 miles in a single charge. The two-motor system in the 2013 Honda Accord will work on three different modes, gasoline-electric, electric-only and a unique engine direct-drive mode.

2012 Buick Regal GS

General Motors now has a truly global product development organization, but it still seems somewhat flustered when it comes to marketing "foreign" cars in the United States. The Buick Regal GS is the latest vehicle -- the Saturn Astra, the Pontiac GTO and G8, and the Cadillac Catera also come to mind -- to land haphazardly on our shores without a well-defined mission.

To recap briefly, the Opel Insignia, which debuted in Europe to rave reviews in 2008, was supposed to come to the United States as part of a broad alliance between Opel and Saturn. Alas, Saturn went belly up and GM ran away from the idea of an "Opel USA," though the company's latest products, including the Chevrolet Cruze and the upcoming Malibu, ride on platforms developed largely in Europe. Cast about in this shuffle, the Insignia, by now a three-year-old car, arrived to fight in a bitterly competitive segment wearing an old muscle-car nameplate for a brand looking to steal Lexus buyers. As if that weren't enough to swallow, the official launch party for the GS, which I attended, was at a Buick-sponsored Plain White Tees concert in Miami Beach. Can you say, "Huh?" Compare this confusion with the focused campaign that accompanied the Ford Fiesta's U.S. launch, and you'll see the issue.

I bring all this up because I worry the marketing will sabotage a very good product. The GS treatment polishes over our complaints about the Regal 2.0T. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder seems to breathe more freely in this high-output configuration and suffers less from turbo lag, though the moment's hesitation off the line and a faint whistling keep it from quite matching the Audi A4's excellent four-cylinder. The GS has some of the sharpest steering I've experienced in a front-wheel-drive car, and despite the extra power, doesn't suffer from much torque steer. It dives into corners with almost unsettling quickness and exhibits very little body roll, especially when the dampers are in "GS" mode. The firm ride, progressive brake pedal, and slick manual shifter all further the impression that the Regal is a well thought out European sedan. And unlike the imported Holdens and Opels of yore, the Regal doesn't have a bland exterior or a confounding interior. The latter does suffer from having too many center-console buttons but this, again, reflects the car's age more than its origin. Some will continue to question the decision to forgo the Insignia OPC's turbo V-6 and all-wheel drive. I actually drove that car and find this setup much lighter and more responsive feeling.

Most of my life I've associated Buick with my grandmother. It's all she has ever owned. Then my brother bought one, but it did not change my mind; he always buys old-lady cars. Then Buick showed up at the magazine's offices with the Regal GS, and I went outside with the staff for the walkaround of the car with the chief engineer and the PR guy. My first impression was, wow, this is a Buick? It looked so nice, with its carbon metallic paint glistening in the sun. When I drove it, it seemed like a menagerie of features from competitors. Some of the interior controls reminded me of Audi. The information toggle mouse is like the ones Mercedes uses, and the powertrain, right down to the whistle in the turbo, is pure Saab. Interior styling reflects Hyundai. All in all, the car is far better to drive than any other Buick I've ever been in. I'd probably buy it before its Asian competitors, but it's a hard sell against the European lineup.

Car and Driver magazine has named the 2012 Honda Accord 4-cylinder and the 2012 Honda Fit as two winners of its prestigious and highly competitive, annual "10Best Cars" award. Now in its eighth generation, the Accord has achieved "10Best Cars" status 26 times in the 30 years that Car and Driver editors have been conducting the competition, more than any other vehicle in the award's history. The Honda Fit has been honored with "10Best Cars" status in each of the six years that it has been on sale in the United States.

TOKYO, Japan, November 30, 2011 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. will exhibit the world premiere of the EV-STER, the next-generation electric small sports concept model, at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show 2011, which will take place at Tokyo Big Sight from Saturday, December 3 through Sunday, December 11, 2011.

Featuring a dynamic and innovative styling design and excellent environmental performance, the EV-STER, an electric rear-wheel-drive two-seater convertible sports car, will propose a new way to enjoy a sports type model which is unique to the electromotive mobility. The adoption of carbon materials made it possible to reduce the vehicle weight contributing to the vehicle's high driving performance and range of approximately 160km. The easy-to-operate twin-lever steering was adopted for the thorough pursuit of the joy of driving. Moreover, the new concept model enables the driver to make his/her own adjustments to some vehicle characteristics such as motor output and suspension settings, to embody the joy of maneuvering to the fullest extent.

Furthermore, the instrument panel features not only meters, but also the vehicle information display which enables the driver to enjoy driving as well as the network display used for the audio and navigation systems and also for the internet access. The well-designed layout of the meters and displays enables the driver to concentrate on driving and enjoy the comfortable space.

Honda's four-door, five-passenger pickup receives styling upgrades and improved highway fuel economy for 2012, along with a new Ridgeline Sport model that provides high-value features targeted at the entry four-wheel-drive truck segment.

The 2012 Ridgeline is now available in four models, including the Ridgeline RT, new Ridgeline Sport, Ridgeline RTS and Ridgeline RTL. Upgrades on all models for 2012 include a refreshed grille design, aerodynamic improvements, friction reduction measures in the engine and a new EPA fuel rating of 15/21/17 city/highway/combined mpg, up 1 mpg in the highway rating.

The new Ridgeline Sport model adds the following features to the Ridgeline RT: exclusive black 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels (+1 inch from RT steel wheels); exclusive black honeycomb grille with black surround; leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; auxiliary audio input jack; fog lights; rear privacy glass; all weather floor mats and black headlight and brake light housings.

The Ridgeline represents an exclusive and innovative approach in the half-ton pickup truck segment by prioritizing its construction and features based on the capabilities that many recreational truck buyers typically need and use. The Ridgeline is built with a closed-box, unitized body structure for a unique combination of capability, interior spaciousness and comfortable ride performance from its independent front and rear suspension. It also delivers a wide range of conventional pickup capabilities with a maximum tow rating of 5,000 pounds and a half-ton payload rating, all while offering unique features like a large In-Bed Trunk®.

Functionally Innovative Exterior
The unit-body architecture is designed for vastly superior rigidity compared to traditional body-on-frame designs and provides the foundation for the Ridgeline's spacious interior cabin and bed, safety performance and class-leading ride and handling performance. The Ridgeline's modern and athletic design incorporates a solid, one-piece appearance with no separation between the bed and the cab.

Large side mirrors compliment rear vision while towing. The windshield wipers have a heated wiper zone to enhance wiper performance in cold, winter driving conditions and minimize ice scraping.

A 5-foot-long composite cargo bed with eight tie-down locations provides a payload rating of 1,100 pounds. Four cargo area lights illuminate both the bed and the in-bed trunk. A dual-action tailgate opens down for traditional access to the cargo area or to the side for ease-of-access to the 8.5 cubic-foot In-Bed Trunk®. The Ridgeline is available with a wide variety of accessories and can conveniently accommodate motorcycles and ATVs. The cargo area measures 49.5 inches wide between the wheel wells, 20.7 inches deep and 60.0 inches long (79.0 inches with the load-supporting tailgate in the down position).

Roomy and Comfortable Interior
The interior takes advantage of Honda's unit-body packaging efficiency to deliver full-size interior space dimensions while maintaining a garage-friendly, mid-size exterior footprint. The driving position provides ergonomically comfortable access to large and easy-to-use controls.

Ridgeline's large multi-function console features a sliding armrest and sliding lower tray – each with a hidden storage area. Other console storage areas accommodate items both large and small like mobile phones, beverages, compact discs and portable digital music players.

The 60/40 lift-up rear seats feature a storage area underneath large enough to accommodate a golf bag. Plus, the rear seating area can quickly convert for cargo duty by lifting the seats up to create enough room for a full-size mountain bike with the front tire removed. The rear seat incorporates three LATCH positions for compatible child safety seats.

Strong, Versatile Performance
Ridgeline's all-aluminum, 60-degree, SOHC 3.5-liter VTEC engine produces 250 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 247 lb-ft. of torque at 4,300 rpm. Variable valve timing enhances low rpm torque while extending high rpm horsepower for a broad power band. The 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission features Grade Logic Control to help maintain the most appropriate gear when going uphill or downhill to avoid gear "hunting." The fully automatic Variable Torque Management® 4-wheel drive system (VTM-4®) provides confident operation in rain, snow, ice, sand and mud, while also improving on-road and towing performance by distributing torque to all four wheels as needed.

The system operates predominately in front-wheel-drive during dry-pavement cruising conditions and continuously proportions torque to the rear wheels during acceleration and low traction situations. VTM-4 lock button located on the instrument panel allows the driver to temporarily hold engagement of both rear wheels to aid traction while in gears "1" and "2" at speeds of up to 18 mph.

Standard equipment for towing includes an integrated tow hitch, transmission and oil coolers, heavy duty brakes, dual radiator fans and a wiring harness for a seven-pin trailer hook up (pre-wiring only on RT and Sport).

Chassis Specifications
Fully independent, a MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link with trailing arm rear suspension provide a smooth ride and responsive handling. A heavy-duty braking system includes 12.6-inch front and 13.1-inch rear 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The Ridgeline RT has 17x7.5-inch steel wheels and P245/65 R17 all-season tires, while the Ridgeline RTS upgrades to 17x7.5-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Ridgeline Sport and Ridgeline RTL models are uniquely equipped with 18x7.5-inch aluminum alloy wheels and all-season P245/60 R18 tires.

Committed to Safety
All Ridgelines are equipped with these standard safety features: advanced dual-state, multiple-threshold driver's and front passenger's SRS airbags; front side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); two-row side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor; front-seat active head restraints; a tire pressure monitoring system; and daytime running lights. Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), commonly referred to as electronic stability control, can apply braking force to a wheel with low traction and direct driving force to the wheel with more traction.

Pontiac Drivers Stick With GM

It’s been more than a year since the last Pontiac dealer shut down, but many of the brand’s former customers have stayed in the General Motors family.

Edmunds.com found that 39.9 percent of Pontiac owners who traded in for a new car this year opted for a GM vehicle. This retention rate is eight-percentage-points greater than GM’s retention rate in 2010, and represents the highest retention rate since 2007, when the rate was also 39.9 percent.

This year GM’s Chevrolet brand has been most successful in retaining former Pontiac owners, with 28.1 percent of them choosing Chevy as their new brand. Edmunds.com’s analysis said Chevy sales to former Pontiac owners were particularly strong in January and February of this year, when GM made aggressive incentive plays to retain old customers and conquest new ones.

Chevrolet has also been getting extra exposure this year because it’s the brand’s 100-year anniversary.

“Any time a manufacturer shuts down a brand, there’s a concern that its consumers will shift loyalties to another company,” said Michelle Krebs, senior analyst at Edmunds.com. “General Motors took a calculated risk that it could retain Pontiac drivers under its umbrella, and the gamble appears to have paid off – with even more success than they enjoyed in previous years when Pontiac was still an option for returning customers.”

Ford Motor Co., meanwhile, has been the most successful outside brand to woo Pontiac owners this year.
An estimated 9.4 percent of former Pontiac owners jumped to Ford in 2011, but the rate is down from last year’s reported 12.4 percent. Honda and Toyota have each managed to win over an estimated 7.4 percent of Pontiac customers, which is for both brands a lower rate than last year.

44-mpg Insight offers highest fuel economy of any new vehicle under $20,000

10/17/2011 - TORRANCE, Calif.

A significantly updated 2012 Insight hybrid debuts today with new exterior styling, an enhanced interior, additional features on select models and an EPA fuel economy-rating1 improvement of 1 mpg.

The Insight’s city/highway/combined EPA fuel economy rating¹ of 41/44/42 mpg, up from 40/43/41 on the prior model, continues to offer the highest EPA fuel economy rating of any new vehicle currently available with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting under $20,000.

The aerodynamically styled, five-passenger, five-door dedicated hybrid vehicle receives extensive changes inside and out for 2012. Exterior changes include a more distinctive grille design that introduces a thin, blue accent bar representative of the Insight’s high-tech hybrid identity. Restyled front and rear bumpers, along with changes under the vehicle, contribute to a 2-percent increase in aerodynamic performance. New designs for the headlight and brake light internal reflectors further complete the refreshed look. Insight and Insight LX models have new 15-inch wheel covers and the Insight EX has newly styled 15-inch alloy wheels. Slightly wider 185/60R15 tires, up from 175/65R15 tires on the prior model, contribute to confident driving performance.

The Insight’s interior refinements for 2012 include a reconfigured rear seat area for better leg and head room; a redesigned gauge cluster background with a more technically sophisticated appearance; reshaped center-console beverage holders that accommodate larger drinks; and a more supportive front armrest (Insight LX and EX).

The Insight LX has new, more premium seat fabric, while the Insight EX is upholstered with a combination of synthetic leather (new) and premium fabric. Rear-seat headroom improves by 0.6 inches with changes to the rear headliner shape and deeper sculpting of the rear seat cushion to improve rear passenger comfort. Rearward visibility improves with a more compactly mounted rear-wiper motor housing and a thinner rear spoiler that creates a larger viewing area out the lower back window. The Insight becomes quieter for 2012 with increased thickness to the vehicle’s existing noise-insulation materials and additional insulation panels in the cargo area.

Available on Insight EX models, the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with voice recognition²receives several notable upgrades including the addition of a rearview camera. The system provides routing and guidance to individual addresses and more than 7-million points of interest within the continental United States. A 16-GB flash memory system replaces the 4.7-GB DVD-based system used on the prior model. The new system offers faster route calculation and includes FM traffic, a subscription-free service that alerts drivers to traffic conditions.

The Insight is powered by an Integrated Motor Assist™ (IMA™) system comprised of a 1.3-liter i‑VTEC® gasoline 4-cylinder engine and a 10-kilowatt electric motor. The combination develops 98 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 123 lb-ft. of torque at 1000-1700 rpm. For 2012, friction-reducing measures in the engine and the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) contribute to the new model’s increased fuel economy. A 10.6-gallon fuel tank provides an estimated maximum driving range exceeding 400 miles.

The Insight features the Eco Assist™ System, an innovation that can enhance efficient vehicle operation while providing feedback related to individual driving styles. Eco Assist can help drivers improve fuel efficiency, both by altering vehicle functionality and providing driver feedback, with fuel economy dependent on their given set of driving conditions. Pressing the ECON button can further enhance the efficiency of multiple vehicle systems: throttle control, CVT operation, idle-stop duration, air conditioning and cruise-control operation (if equipped). Eco Assist also provides feedback about driving style via a 3D-like background within the speedometer. The background changes colors from green to blue to reflect how efficiently or inefficiently the driver is accelerating or braking (green is more efficient).

Aerodynamic refinements for 2012 include changes to the shape of the engine bay underbody cover and the addition of air diffusers under the rear bumper to smooth airflow exiting behind the vehicle. The strakes ahead of the front wheels have been extended by 0.4 inches to better direct air around the wider front tires.

Standard safety features on all Insight models include dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; front-side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); side-curtain airbag system; anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution (EBD); driver’s and front-passenger’s active head restraints; and a front body structure designed to mitigate pedestrian injuries. The Insight also features Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, which provides improved occupant protection and crash compatibility between vehicles of different sizes and ride heights in frontal crashes.

The 2012 Insight is offered in three distinct models. The value-oriented base model, simply designated as "Insight," is well equipped with a 160-watt, two-speaker audio system, automatic climate control, power windows, remote entry and more.

The Insight LX adds a four-speaker audio system, USB audio interface, armrest console, floor mats and a security system. New for 2012, the LX has map lights and steering wheel audio controls.

The Insight EX adds alloy wheels, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, an audio system with six speakers, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals and much more. For 2012, the EX gains Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®³, automatic headlights and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The Insight EX is available with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition and rearview camera.

New exterior colors include Frosted Silver Metallic and Truffle Pearl, which replace Clear Sky Blue and Crimson Pearl.

2012 Honda CR-Z Sport Hybrid Coupe Promotes Performance and Fuel Economy

All new for 2011 when it was named the “Most-Efficient Two Seater” by the EPA¹, the 2012 CR-Z debuts today with one available feature change – a new black seat fabric becomes an option on cars with the Crystal Black Pearl exterior color, replacing the standard silver mesh sport seats. The 2012 CR-Z starts at $19,545, plus a destination and handling² charge of $770.

The CR-Z is available in two models – the well-equipped CR-Z and the feature-rich CR-Z EX. A six-speed manual transmission is standard equipment and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is available. Standard features on the CR-Z include Vehicle Stability Assist, an AM/FM/CD/USB audio system with six speakers, automatic climate control, power windows and door locks, remote entry, cruise control, and more.

The CR-Z EX adds High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Headlights with Auto-On/Off, fog lights, a 360-Watt AM/FM/CD Premium Audio System with seven speakers including subwoofer, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and more. Technological Sophistication Inside and Out
The exterior’s “one-motion” wedge form begins at its low-slung hood to form a broad forward stance. A side profile with a deeply inset beltline adds a dynamic element, while the short wheelbase and large, wide front grille accent the vehicle’s athletic look. Exterior colors include Crystal Black Pearl, Milano Red Pearl, North Shore Blue Metallic (exclusive to CR-Z), Premium White Pearl and Storm Silver Metallic.

A high-tech appearance and intuitive controls define the interior. Instrument panel meters illuminate with a three-dimensional blue color theme resulting in a multi-layered appearance. Set against textured black materials and aluminum-style trim accents, the upper portion of the dashboard extends toward the driver to provide a wraparound cockpit environment. Premium sport-oriented seats are designed to provide firm lateral support along with everyday driving comfort. A mid-ship console behind the front seats optimizes cargo space, and a hard-shell separator can be closed to create additional hidden storage.

The CR-Z features a six-speaker, 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with an auxiliary input jack for connection to a portable audio player, and all models include a USB audio interface⁴ for connecting an iPod⁵ or other compatible audio device. Other audio features include speed-sensitive volume control and CD/MP3 text readout. The radio data system shows supplemental programming information from participating radio stations while also offering search-by-genre capability (not available on the CR-Z EX with navigation).

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™³ is available on the CR-Z EX model and features a 6.5-inch display. The navigation system database includes more than 7-million points of interest and integrates the audio system. The voice recognition feature is capable of inputting numbers, street names and cities, in addition to more than 600 commands. Data storage is via a single DVD that contains information for the entire United States.

Performance and Efficiency
The CR-Z hybrid powertrain is a unique variation of Honda’s original IMA technology , which originally debuted on the 2000 Honda Insight, the first hybrid vehicle available for sale in North America. The system utilizes a four-cylinder, 16-valve, single-overhead cam engine with “intelligent” Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC) that receives additional power from the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system’s DC brushless electric motor. The system delivers a combined peak output of 122 horsepower at 6000 RPM and 128 lb-ft. of torque at 1000 to 1750 RPM (123 lb-ft. at 1000 to 2000 on CVT-equipped models).

The 10-kilowatt electric motor assists in acceleration and also acts as a generator during braking or coasting to capture kinetic energy that recharges the 100-volt IMA nickel-metal hydride battery pack. The gasoline engine can automatically turn off during vehicle stops to improve efficiency. When starting on steep inclines from a stop with the manual transmission, hill start assist temporarily prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards during the moment between releasing the brake, depressing the throttle and releasing the clutch.

EPA-estimated fuel economy⁶ is 35/39/37 city/highway/combined mpg on CVT-equipped models and 31/37/34 city/highway/combined mpg on manual models. The CR-Z is rated as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) in states that adhere to California Air Resource Board (CARB) ZEV standards (EPA Tier 2, Bin 2 in all states).

Three-Mode Drive System
Activated via three backlit buttons to the left of the steering wheel, the three-mode drive system allows the driver to select between individual modes of performance for Sport, Normal and Economy driving styles:

Sport mode enhances engine throttle responsiveness, electric power steering effort and the electric motor power assist.
Normal mode standardizes steering, engine response, motor assist and air conditioning settings.
Econ mode can increase the potential for enhanced fuel efficiency by optimizing throttle angle for smooth acceleration, lower engine rpm and limiting power and torque by approximately 4 percent (except at wide-open throttle). It can also reduce the air conditioning’s overall load on the engine and modify the cruise control to operate more efficiently.

Safety by Design
The CR-Z demonstrates a commitment to safety in its design and construction. The Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure helps protect vehicle occupants in a frontal collision. Additional safety technologies include: standard dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; standard front-side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); side-curtain airbags, active head restraints; an anti-lock braking system (ABS); a tire pressure monitoring system; and a pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front of the vehicle.

Sport-Tuned Chassis
The front MacPherson strut and rear H-shaped torsion beam suspension are tuned to provide a sporty driving experience. All models are equipped with 16x6-inch aluminum wheels with 195/55R16 86V tires, while accessory 17x7 alloy wheels with 205/45R17 84V tires are available. The standard anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake distribution (EBD) uses ventilated front discs and solid rear discs. The low vehicle height and placement of the battery and other hybrid components beneath the rear cargo area further contribute to a low center of gravity and responsive, sporty handling. Electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering enhances steering performance and improves efficiency.

The 2012 Honda CR-V Concept made its public debut at the Orange County International Auto Show in Anaheim, Calif., today, and introduced the styling direction for the all-new, fourth-generation CR-V. The 2012 CR-V is set to go on sale in the United States by the end of the year and will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

"The 2012 CR-V Concept strongly hints at the more dynamic and refined look of the upcoming model," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "As the best-selling SUV in each of the past four years, the 2012 CR-V promises to build on its highly successful formula with even more style, innovative features and higher fuel economy."

The CR-V Concept embraces a distinctive and bold styling direction for the top-selling¹ SUV in the United States. Compared to the current-generation CR-V, the concept model takes on a more aggressive stance with deeper sculpting of the body lines and a bolder front fascia. The front bumper's smooth-flowing lines are highlighted by a horizontal three-bar grille and deeply set multi-reflector headlights. The lower front bumper wraps smartly upward to convey SUV capability with a generous approach angle, while the lower front bumper design now integrates more smoothly with the fascia for improved aerodynamics.

Current Honda Construction Projects In Ohio Now Exceed $400 Million

09/21/2011 - RUSSELLS POINT, Ohio

Building on a series of recent investments at Honda manufacturing facilities across the state of Ohio, Honda Transmission Mfg. of America, Inc. today announced a $50 million expansion to increase capacity for the casting of aluminum transmission cases. This latest project brings Honda's total new capital investment in its Ohio operations to more than $400 million, and more than $8 billion since the company started manufacturing in the state in 1979.

The 75,000-square-foot expansion at the Russells Point plant will house high-pressure die-casting operations to support the addition of a third transmission assembly line that began construction in December 2010. The new assembly line announced earlier, part of a 200,000-square foot plant expansion, will increase the plant's capabilities to manufacture Honda's latest transmission technologies.

The two projects together will create more than 100 jobs by 2013 as production begins at these two new operations. In addition, earlier this year, Honda Transmission added 60 new jobs to support the start of a second shift to produce automatic transmissions for the all-new 2012 model Honda Civic.
"This latest investment in Ohio is another example of how we intend to meet the needs of our global customers by implementing advanced technologies in our production operations and in our products," said Honda Transmission President Yuji Takahashi. "It also demonstrates our commitment to Honda's Ohio production operations to reduce the environmental impact of our facilities while positioning this facility to compete at the highest levels on a global basis."

The expansion will house advanced aluminum casting machines to support production of Honda's latest transmissions, and introduces an efficient melting furnace to the plant's operations. Honda Transmission now receives approximately 100,000 pounds of molten aluminum per day from two aluminum mills in Indiana.

"The new melting furnace will implement technologies that will improve efficiencies and reduce our environmental impacts," said Plant Manager Gary Hand. "These improved efficiencies will reduce waste and energy consumption."

Already a zero waste-to-landfill facility, Hand adds that the plant will continue reusing and recycling all leftover materials from its operations, sending no waste to landfills.

The investment also includes construction of a new associate entrance, along with a new lobby entrance and activity center, at the south end of the facility. When completed, Honda Transmission's extensive casting, machining, forging and assembly operations will encompass 1 million square feet.

These projects are the latest in a series of investments at this state-of-the-art transmission facility.

Earlier this year, Honda Transmission completed a $25 million renovation of the plant's aluminum machining lines, steel gear production, and to increase flexibility on the current assembly lines. These modifications resulted in adding domestic production of six-speed automatic transmissions this year for some Honda Odyssey models.

Since starting production of automatic transmissions in 1996, Honda Transmission has steadily expanded to keep pace with Honda's growth in the new passenger car and light truck model segments. Production of transmission gears was added in 2006 and four-wheel-drive assemblies in 2007. Those projects, which doubled the plant's size, localized production of most steel gears and four-wheel-drive assemblies for Honda's North America operations.

Honda Transmission currently employs approximately 1,000 associates who manufacture transmissions and four-wheel-drive assemblies for automobiles produced at the Marysville and East Liberty auto plants in Ohio, as well as other plants in North America. The impact of Honda Transmission's production extends to some 50 domestic suppliers that provide more than 500 parts for the plant's production.

Other Major Honda Construction In Ohio
Since November 2010, Honda has undertaken a series of plant innovation projects in Ohio exceeding $355 million. These projects are central to Honda's future in Ohio and its ability to compete globally.

Construction is under way on a 155,000-square-foot expansion at the East Liberty Auto Plant for new door and instrument panel sub-assembly lines, and extension of its automobile assembly line. Additionally, construction began this year on a 40,000-square-foot expansion to consolidate the plant's Vehicle Quality Department.
At the Marysville Auto Plant, a new stamping press is under construction that will increase the speed, precision and capacity of the plant's metal-forming capabilities. The $64 million project encompasses 24,000 square feet in the plant.
On-site parts consolidation centers under construction at the Anna Engine Plant and East Liberty plant will improve efficiency by reducing parts handling and truck shuttles.
Beginning operations in early 2012, the $31 million consolidation center at the Anna plant, encompassing 320,000 square feet, will eliminate approximately 2.8 million pounds of CO2 emissions per year by reducing truck traffic.
The 396,000-square-foot center at the East Liberty facility will eliminate 2.5 million pounds of CO2 emissions per year - when fully operational in 2014.

More About Honda's Ohio Operations
Since starting auto production in 1982 using domestic and globally sourced parts, Honda has produced more than 14 million vehicles at it's two Ohio auto plants. In Anna, Ohio, Honda's largest auto engine plant in the world manufactures four-cylinder and V-6 engines for automobile production in Ohio, Indiana and Canada.

In addition to its manufacturing operations, Honda has established substantial R&D and engineering operations in Ohio, along with a large regional parts distribution center and other operations that support product development, manufacturing and sales in North America. Honda Earns Highest Disclosure Scores Among Japanese Companies in Carbon Disclosure Project 2011 Global 500 Report

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) commended Honda in its 9th annual report, the 2011 Global 500 Report, which analyzes the responses of the world's 500 largest companies to a CDP questionnaire regarding the company’s strategies and corporate governance to address climate change and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Honda was recognized for its comprehensive information disclosure and listed as one of only 52 companies in the CDP's "Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index" (CDLI) with the highest score among all Japanese companies included in the survey. The CDLI features companies which have demonstrated the most professional approach to corporate governance regarding the disclosure of climate change information.

Honda was also featured as one of only 29 companies in CDP's "Carbon Performance Leadership Index" (CPLI). The CPLI was first established last year and highlights companies which have demonstrated a strong commitment to strategy, governance, stakeholder communications and emissions reduction in their CDP responses.

The CDP was established in the United Kingdom in 2000 as an independent not-for-profit organization and now represents 551 institutional investors with $71 trillion in assets. It has been operating with support from the governments of European countries and the U.S. as well as investors from all around the world. The CDP sends out standardized questionnaires to private-sector businesses and collects responses to analyze and disclose climate change information. The CDP now holds the largest database of primary corporate climate change information in the world.

Honda realizes that its proactive efforts in addressing climate change issues resulted in this recognition by CDP simultaneously in CDLI and CPLI. Honda will further enhance its environmental activities globally and locally in each region while at the same time taking a proactive approach to further advance its information disclosure practices.

Body

Additionally, the styling cue creates a relatively large third-row window that enhances the outward perspective for third-row passengers. Engineered for a quiet interior, the Odyssey's highly-rigid body with 59 percent high-strength steel (an exceptional amount by industry standards) helps enhance the effectiveness of the vehicle's sound-deadening material to isolate road noise. The high-strength steel also helps to reduce body weight for better fuel economy and optimize body rigidity for agile handling.

Interior and Features

Technology
Technology features available on certain models include a Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System² with Voice Recognition, which is available on the Odyssey EX-L and standard on the Odyssey Touring. The system features an 8-inch, high-resolution VGA color display and GPS technology to provide turn-by-turn guidance to a destination, in addition to other features including subscription-free FM Traffic data and a Zagat® restaurant guide.

Standard on the Odyssey Touring Elite is the state-of-the-art, factory-integrated Rear Entertainment System that includes an ultra-wide 16.2-inch flip-down LCD screen and a 12-speaker, 650-Watt sound system capable of reproducing Dolby® Digital 5.1 Surround Sound in 360-degree detail. A High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) video input and two wireless headphones for rear passengers are also provided. Powertrain
An advanced 3.5-liter, 24-valve, SOHC, i-VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) provides a balanced combination of performance, fuel economy and low emissions. The engine produces 248 hp (the most ever for Odyssey) and 250 lb-ft. of torque, while delivering an EPA-estimated city/highway/combined fuel economy² of 19/28/22 mpg on Odyssey Touring models (18/27/21 mpg on Odyssey LX, EX and EX-L models). A 5-speed automatic transmission is standard on Odyssey LX, EX and EX-L models. Odyssey Touring models feature a 6-speed automatic transmission for enhanced driving refinement.

Chassis
A 118.1-inch wheelbase, a fully independent suspension design and features such as Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) with traction control contribute to the Odyssey's confident driving performance and comfortable ride. The MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension allows each wheel to maintain its own contact patch with the road, which is a significant benefit compared to less sophisticated torsion beam-style rear suspensions often used on other minivans.

Safety
The Odyssey was recently named a TOP SAFETY PICK from IIHS, the institute's highest safety rating. The rating recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side and rear crashes, plus rollover performance based on ratings in IIHS tests, as well as having a standard electronic stability control system. The Odyssey earned the highest-possible score of GOOD in all four ratings, including the rigorous roof-strength test. Honda will voluntarily recall 310,773 Pilot vehicles from the 2009 through 2011 model years in the U.S. to inspect and potentially replace the driver’s and/or front passenger’s seat belt.

Honda initiated this voluntary recall due to a manufacturing error on a small number of front seat belts, where the stitching connecting the lap section of the belt to the outboard anchor webbing may be incomplete or missing. In a crash, affected seat belts may become disconnected from the anchor webbing, increasing the risk of injury. No injuries or deaths have been reported related to this condition.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage all owners of affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. The only way to concretely determine whether the seat belts in an affected vehicle were properly completed is through a specific inspection process conducted by an authorized dealer; the inspection (and any necessary seat belt replacement) will be conducted for free. Written notification to customers will begin in early October 2011.

When Honda identifies concerns of this nature, nothing is more important to the company than fulfilling its obligation and responsibility to alert customers. To this end, in addition to contacting customers by mail, after early October, owners of these vehicles will be able to determine if their vehicles require repair by going on-line to www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (800) 999-1009, and selecting option 4.

Statement by American Honda Regarding Two Recalls: 2006 Honda CR-V; 2011 Honda CR-Z with Manual Transmission

Honda will notify affected owners of two voluntary recalls in the U.S. in late September 2011.

Honda will voluntarily recall 80,111 CR-V vehicles from the 2006 model year in the U.S. to replace the power window master switch. The design of the power window master switch can allow residue from interior cleaners to accumulate, which can, over time with switch use, cause the electrical contacts to degrade and may lead to a fire in the switch. No injuries or deaths have been reported related to this condition.

Additionally, Honda will voluntarily recall 5,626 CR-Z vehicles from the 2011 model year in the U.S. that are equipped with manual transmissions to update the software that controls the hybrid electric motor. In the affected vehicles, when the gasoline engine has stalled with the IMA battery in a very low state of charge and the transmission in gear, it is possible for the electric motor to rotate in the direction opposite to that selected by the transmission. If this occurs and the driver has not engaged the brakes, the vehicle may slowly roll in an unexpected direction (e.g., backwards when the transmission is in a forward gear), potentially leading to a crash. A software update will add further controls to correct the problem. No injuries or deaths have been reported related to this condition.

Nash-Rocky Mount heralds Teacher of the Year

Tuesday night was all about the cream of the crop at Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools.

The school district paid tribute to 29 of its outstanding educators at the annual Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year Awards celebration held at Rose Hill Conference Center.

Superintendent Dr. Anthony Jackson said recognizing teachers and principals is important because of the harsh economic times.

“Anytime that we can celebrate the good work that’s going on in our classrooms is an outstanding time for us in public education,” Jackson said. “I’m extremely proud of our teachers and the work they do. I’m extremely proud of our school system.”

After Director of Personnel Victor Ward read off each of the names, alma maters and years of experience of the 28 teachers selected by their peers as teachers of the year, Jackson announced Marie Mullins from Parker Middle School as the 2011-12 Teacher of the Year.

“I love what I do, and I have loved it since the day I entered my first classroom,” Mullins said. “It was a dream of mine.”

She said students come to teachers wanting to learn, regardless of the problems they may have at home or school.

“I’ve had awesome principals and awesome students, and I love all of them,” she said. “All of our students can learn. We have to believe in them.”

Mullins left the celebration with the keys to a brand new 2012 Honda Civic LX presented by Davenport Honda, a business that has provided a new car for the teachers of the year for the past five years.

She and fellow Teacher of the Year finalists, Tina Brown-Moore from Cedar Grove Elementary and George Bischoff from Nash-Rocky Mount Early College High School, received hand-carved crystal apples, personal laptops courtesy of Hospira and $1,000 checks to be used in their classrooms from Wachovia Bank.

Northern Nash High School Principal Michael “Chip” Hodges was selected as Principal of the Year and also received a laptop.

Both Hodges’ and Mullins’ names will be added to the Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools teacher and principal of the year plaques at the school district’s central office.

The 2012 Honda Accord combines a unique balance of style, performance, efficiency and value within a diverse range of spacious sedan and sporty coupe models.

The 2012 lineup, features and specifications remain similar to the 2011 model year when the Accord received upgrades for fuel economy and styling, plus the addition of a Special Edition (SE) trim level. For 2012, a USB audio interface becomes standard on every Accord with the addition of the feature to the Accord LX, LX-P and SE Sedan models.

The Accord Sedan's exterior conveys an upscale and powerful presence with a prominent two-bar grille consisting of chrome-style crossbars, windswept headlights, inset character lines along the body sides and distinctively-shaped C-pillars. Building on the sedan's design character, the Accord Coupe's muscular stance is enhanced by a sporty front fascia design, a sleeker overall roof profile, a shorter wheelbase and an exclusive trunk and tailgate design.

The comfortable and spacious interior is complemented by high-quality materials with an emphasis on switchgear refinement. A hallmark of Honda design, the Accord exhibits simple and intuitive ergonomics with the audio, climate and vehicle controls organized by expected frequency of use. Often-used climate-control buttons are positioned on the left side of the center stack within easy reach of the driver for quick access. Less-frequently used buttons are positioned on the right side.
The front seats are designed to provide supportive cushions for long-range cruising comfort and progressive lateral support while cornering. The fold-down, rear seatback offers cargo-carrying versatility and also includes a lockable pass-through for long items.

The 2012 Honda Accord Sedan earns the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA's) best-possible Overall Vehicle Score¹ of 5 stars. Helping the sedan achieve its top overall score were 5-star ratings in each of the three combined categories of overall frontal crash safety, overall side crash safety and rollover resistance. These achievements represent a significant safety milestone for the automotive industry, as the 2011 Accord Sedan was the first vehicle to receive 5-Star ratings in each combined category.

Listed by increasing levels of feature content, sedan models include the 4-cylinder Accord LX, LX-P (Premium), SE, EX and EX-L, and the 6-cylinder Accord EX V-6 and EX-L V-6. Coupe models include the 4-cylinder Accord LX-S, EX, EX-L, and the 6-cylinder Accord EX V-6 and EX-L V-6. The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System is available on all Accord EX-L models.

Four engine variations are available, starting with a 177-horsepower, 2.4-liter, i‑VTEC 4-cylinder engine in the Accord LX, LX-P and SE Sedans. Next is the 190-horsepower, 2.4-liter, 16-valve DOHC i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine that's standard in the Accord EX and EX-L Sedan models and all 4-cylinder coupe models. The top-of-the-line 3.5-liter, 24-valve, SOHC, i-VTEC V-6 engine produces 271 horsepower and is available in the Accord EX and EX-L Sedan models and the Accord EX-L Coupe. To increase fuel efficiency, Accord V-6 models with automatic transmissions take advantage of Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®) technology, an innovative valvetrain system that can deactivate up to half of the cylinders while cruising. The performance-oriented Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe with the 6-speed manual transmission takes advantage of a special 271-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 VTEC engine that replaces VCM with a performance-tuned valvetrain, intake and exhaust systems to further broaden the torque curve in the low- to mid-rpm range.

Transmission choices vary by engine and trim level and include a 5-speed manual transmission (available on select 4-cylinder models) and a 5-speed automatic transmission (standard on select 4-cylinder models and all V-6 models). Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are standard on the Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe with an automatic transmission. A 6-speed manual transmission is available exclusively on the Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe.

Aerodynamic body features, low-friction engine technology and optimal transmission gear ratios all contribute to excellent fuel efficiency. The most fuel-efficient Accord model is the 4-cylinder sedan equipped with 5-speed automatic transmission, which returns an EPA-estimated² 23/34/27 mpg city/highway/combined. The EPA-estimated¹ fuel-economy rating for the Accord V-6 Sedan model is 20/30/24 mpg city/highway/combined, also with a 5-speed automatic transmission.
For safety, the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure is an exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. The ACE™ design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment. Extensive safety features include front side airbags, side curtain airbags, and driver's and front passenger's active head restraints.

The fully independent, double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension systems inspire confident handling performance while also providing a comfortable ride. The 2012 Accord Sedan comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers (alloy wheels on LX-P and SE), and 17-inch alloy wheels are standard on EX and above sedan models. The Accord Coupe (4-cylinder) has 17-inch alloy wheels as standard equipment, with 18-inch alloy wheels standard on the Accord V-6 Coupe. All Accords feature Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control and 4-wheel disc brakes with an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS).

Three audio systems are available – all with MP3/Windows Media® Audio (WMA) playback capability, an auxiliary input jack and the USB audio interface. The standard system provides a single-disc CD player, six speakers and 160 watts of power. Radio Data System (RDS) displays information broadcast by participating FM radio stations that often includes call letters, station type (searchable by genre) and programming information. Steering wheel-mounted audio controls come standard on every Accord. The Accord EX Sedan and LX-S Coupe add a 6-disc in-dash changer.

A premium 270-watt audio system comes standard on Accord EX Coupe and Accord EX-L Sedan models, which includes a 6-disc CD changer and seven speakers including an 8-inch subwoofer. XM Radio® is standard equipment on all Accord EX-L models.

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System² (available on Accord EX-L) has an 8-inch screen and an interface dial for user input. The navigation system features the Zagat Survey® guide for restaurants, nightlife, hotels and attractions, in addition to a rear-view camera on the EX-L Sedan. Accord EX and EX-L Coupe and Accord EX-L Sedan models include Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® as standard equipment for connecting wirelessly with compatible mobile phones.

Currently more than 95 percent of new Accords sold in the United States are produced⁴ at Honda of America Manufacturing Inc.'s Marysville Auto Plant in Marysville, Ohio. 2012 Honda Fit Receives Updates and More Features

The Honda Fit builds on its proven strengths for 2012 with updated styling on Fit Sport, interior upgrades on all models, and the addition of new standard and available features.

The Fit's compact size and tight turning diameter (34.4 feet, curb-to-curb) can conveniently navigate space-confined urban areas and fit in small parking spaces. Yet a roomy and versatile interior offers the convenience and cargo volume of a relatively larger vehicle. Compared to any other vehicle in the subcompact class, the five-passenger Fit provides the lowest, flattest cargo floor and the most cargo volume of 57.3 cu-ft. when the rear seats are down. Its four distinct seat configurations are designed to accommodate large objects ranging from mountain bikes to surfboards to tall houseplants.

Fit Sport exterior updates for 2012 include new designs for the front grille and bumper, black headlight bezels and a dark "machined surface" finish for the alloy wheels (replaces a painted finish appearance). The entry-model Fit retains its exclusive front fascia design and for 2012 receives body-color exterior mirrors (previously black) and updated wheel covers.

Inside, the Fit Sport interior is enhanced with dark metallic dashboard components for a unified color theme (replacing the previous gray and black theme). Fit Sport receives additional chrome accents around instrument displays. All models receive newly designed console-mounted center beverage holders along with console ambient lighting, which provide easier access and greater stability. All models also receive added sound insulation measures in the floor, front fenders and A-pillars, plus thicker front corner-window glass, to help create a quieter, more-refined cabin environment. Two new colors are available: Blue Raspberry Metallic and Orangeburst Metallic, which replace similar colors from the prior model year.

The top-of-the-line Fit Sport includes a long list of exclusive, standard features compared to the entry-model Fit. For 2012, it gains standard steering wheel-mounted audio controls for fingertip operation (previously exclusive to navigation-equipped models) and upgraded seat fabric. When equipped with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with Voice Recognition⁵, the Fit Sport now includes Bluetooth®¹ HandsFreeLink® to help make hands-free telephone calls more convenient. The enhanced system also includes a Bluetooth Audio capability with compatible phones and devices.
Though the Fit has an overall exterior length of just 161.6 inches, the interior provides an impressive 90.8 cubic feet of passenger volume. There's comfortable seating for up to five passengers, and behind the rear seats, there's 20.6 cubic feet of storage space – much more than you'd find in a typical sedan. For enhanced versatility, the exclusive 60/40 split rear Magic Seat® offers multiple seating and cargo-carrying configurations. With its one-motion dive-down functionality, it can fold flat into the floor to maximize rear cargo volume. The Fit's interior can also be easily converted to tall object mode or long object mode based on the shape of the cargo.

The 1.5-liter, i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine is tuned to deliver an engaging combination of power and fuel economy. A five-speed manual transmission is standard and a five-speed automatic transmission is available. Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters on Fit Sport models equipped with the available automatic transmission allow for manual gear selection.

All models are powered by a four-cylinder engine that produces 117 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 106 lb-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm. When equipped with the available automatic transmission, the Fit has an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) city/highway/combined fuel economy rating of 28/35/31 miles per gallon³. The Fit Sport with the available automatic transmission has an EPA city/highway/combined fuel economy rating³ of 27/33/30 miles per gallon. All manual transmission-equipped models have an EPA city/highway/combined fuel economy rating of 27/33/29 miles per gallon³.

A sporty, refined and dynamic driving experience is provided by the front MacPherson strut suspension and torsion beam rear suspension. Fifteen- and 16-inch wheels (Fit and Fit Sport, respectively) feature 175/65 R15 84S (Fit) and 185/55 R16 83H (Fit Sport) tires. The standard anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) uses 10.3-inch ventilated discs in the front and 7.9-inch drums in the rear.

All Fit models are equipped with a wide range of standard safety equipment including Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, anti-lock brakes and more. Dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, front-side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) and side-curtain airbags are also standard equipment for 2012.

Standard comfort and convenience features include air conditioning, cruise control, remote entry, a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers, a USB audio interface⁴, an auxiliary audio input jack, MP3/WMA playback capability, Radio Data System (RDS), power windows, power mirrors, power door locks and a security system.

Statement by American Honda Regarding Automatic Transmission Control Module Software Recall: 2005-2010 Accord, 2007-2010 CR-V and 2005-2008 Element

Honda will voluntarily recall approximately 1.5 million vehicles in the U.S. to update the software that controls the automatic transmission. Certain 2005-2010 4-cylinder Accord, 2007-2010 CR-V and 2005-2008 Element vehicles will be included in the voluntary recall. Without the updated software, the automatic transmission secondary shaft bearing in the affected vehicles can be damaged if the transmission is quickly shifted between each of the reverse, neutral and drive positions, as may be done in an attempt to dislodge a vehicle stuck in mud or snow. If the bearing is damaged in this unusual scenario, it can cause the engine to stall or lead to difficulty engaging the parking gear. The update to the vehicle's automatic transmission control module software will ease the transition between gears to reduce the possibility of damage. No injuries or deaths have been reported related to this condition.

The 2012 Honda Crosstour® approaches the crossover SUV formula from a distinctively sleek, sporty and fuel-efficient perspective while also maximizing the interior's cargo capacity, versatility and premium feel.

The Crosstour's exterior design emphasizes a bold, aerodynamic look that also conceals an accommodating rear cargo area with a large, lift-over tailgate. Premium interior styling, appointments and details extend from the passenger compartment all the way through the cargo area. An under-floor storage area in the rear of the vehicle adds functionality, while reversible cargo floor panels accommodate dirty objects.

The Crosstour is available in two trim levels, the Crosstour EX and EX-L, with Real Time™ 4WD also available on the EX-L model. For 2012, new features on the Crosstour EX include auto on/off headlights, a rearview camera, Bluetooth®¹ HandsFreeLink® and USB audio interface. Nash-Rocky Mount Public School System Teachers of the Year will soon find out which of the 28 educators will be the recipient of a brand-new 2012 Honda Civic LX.

This is the fifth year that Neill Nelson, general manager of Davenport Autopark, has donated an automobile for the school district’s Teacher of the Year to use for the entire school year.

“Davenport Honda believes in supporting education and our dedicated educators in the Nash-Rocky Mount area. We truly appreciate teachers and the incredible job they do for our children and our community,” Nelson said. “The Teacher and Principal of the Year Celebration is always a highlight of the year.”

Four laptop computers provided by Hospira also will be given to the three finalists for Teacher of the Year and the Principal of the Year. Finalists will receive a hand carved crystal apple and $1,000 to be used in their classrooms as part of the Ben Craig award presented by Wachovia Bank.

Suzanne Weaver, Red Oak Elementary School Music Teacher and 2010-11 Teacher of the Year, will be on hand to congratulate the 2011-12 teachers of the year and will share with those in attendance her experiences as last year’s Teacher of the Year.

The Teacher of the Year and the Principal of the Year will be announced during a ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Rose Hill Conference Center. A reception will precede the ceremony at 5:30 p.m.

The names and photographs of both the Principal and Teacher of the Year will be added to the Nash-Rocky Mount Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year plaques at the school system’s administrative offices.

2012 Civic Redesign

The changes to the 2012 Civic were aimed to make the Honda Civic even better in key areas of consumer interest. Based on customer input and market realities, Honda focused on achieving the following goals with the 2012 Civic:

Improving fuel economy: The compact sedan market is demanding fuel economy approaching 40 mpg on the highway. This involves reducing weight, reducing engine and drivetrain friction, reducing parasitic draws on engine power, and improving aerodynamics. We did all of these. One of the steps we took to reduce parasitic draws on the engine was the introduction of Motion-Adaptive Electric Power-Assisted Rack-and-Pinion Steering (EPS).
Providing more rear seat legroom: This was in response to customer feedback.
Providing additional standard features: Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control can help to reduce the potential for collisions. It is required by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to be considered for “Top Safety Pick” recognition.
Minimizing any price increase: Given the current state of the economy, we were sensitive to people’s need to get the most for their money.

We have been very successful in meeting the goals for the redesign:

Fuel economy: Civic Sedan AT EPA fuel economy ratings increased by three (3) mpg in City, Highway, and Combined driving. Civic DX, LX, EX/EX-L are now rated at 39 mpg on the highway. Civic HF delivers 41 mpg highway. Civic Hybrid is EPA rated at 44 mpg in city, highway, and combined driving.
Rear seat legroom/interior roominess: Rear seat legroom in the sedan has been increased by 1.6 inches. Overall passenger volume is up by 3.7 cubic feet for increased passenger comfort – especially in the rear seat.
Standard features: Features like VSA with Traction Control and Brake Assist have been made standard across the Civic line.
Pricing: We held the line on price. For example: we have provided all this additional value while increasing the MSRP of the 2012 Civic Sedan LX AT by only $100 over that for the 2011 Civic LX AT.

Fuel Economy: Everyone is concerned about fuel economy today. The 2012 Civic Sedan AT EPA fuel economy ratings increased by three (3) mph in City, Highway, and Combined driving. Civic DX, LX, EX/EX-L are now rated at 39 mpg on the highway. (Please note that Civic Sedan doesn’t have just one trim level hitting this number but all trim levels.) Civic HF will deliver 29 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, with a combined 33 mpg, top of class for any gasoline-only Sedan. Of course, Civic Hybrid delivers 44 mpg across the board – city, highway, and combined driving.
Affordability: Despite the many improvements to the 2012 Civic, Honda held the line on prices. For example, as noted earlier, the MSRP of the 2012 Civic Sedan LX AT increased by only $100 over that for the 2011 Civic LX AT.

The Hyundai Assurance program’s new trade-in value guarantee is getting a lot of attention in the press and from consumers. While it is a clever marketing ploy, a close look at the program reveals that it provides far more benefits for Hyundai than it does for consumers. Honda offers customers the real advantages of proven performance by a market leader.

The Hyundai Promise

The Hyundai Assurance program includes three elements.

• Trade-in value guarantee		• 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain protection
• Roadside assistance

Of these elements, only the trade-in value guarantee is new.

The Fine Print

Trade-in values are established by Automotive Lease Guide and reflect anticipated market values after 24 to 48 months of ownership. The guaranteed trade-in value will, of course, be reduced for damage to the vehicle or excessive mileage.

In order to receive the guaranteed trade-in value, Hyundai customers must…	Hyundai customers give up…
· Provide proof that all required maintenance was performed at authorized Hyundai dealerships	· The ability to have maintenance services performed at an independent shop if it is more convenient.

In life, sometimes you disagree even with those for whom you have the greatest respect. And it seems as if that is what has occurred with the Consumer Reports review of the 2012 Honda Civic LX.

We have great respect for the magazine and its editors, but we fundamentally disagree with their suggestion that Civic doesn't rank among their recommended small cars. As for Consumer Reports, well, the magazine has named Civic as the "top pick" in its segment six times over the past 15 years. So, they are definitely finding fault with someone they have shown a lot of love in the past.
Interestingly, even using Consumer Reports own results, consumers can find ample reason to purchase a new 2012 Civic. The new Civic truly excels in areas that matter to small car customers, including fuel efficiency, safety, and reliability.

Consumer Reports own testing found that Civic's smooth and efficient powertrain returned "... an impressive 30 mpg overall on regular fuel and 47 mpg on the highway." Only one other compact car the magazine tested did better.
In the area of safety, the magazine pointed out that Civic has earned a class-leading 'Top Safety Pick' rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Further, as noted in Consumer Reports findings, the Civic excels with a long list of important safety features that are standard on all trim levels.
Civic has a stellar reliability history with Consumer Reports, and we have complete confidence that the new Civic will be a reliability leader as well. In fact, one of our plants building Civic (in Indiana) earned the top "platinum" award in the 2011 J.D. Power & Associates Initial Quality Study. So, Civic's quality and reliability story has a solid foundation.

It is also important to point out that Consumer Reports reviewed only one Civic model - the Civic LX Sedan. There are actually six different versions of Civic - the Civic Sedan (in DX, LX and EX trim levels), Civic Coupe, sporty Civic Si (Coupe and Sedan), Civic HF high fuel economy model, the Civic Natural gas, and the Civic Hybrid. Consumer Reports has indicated they also plan to test the Civic Hybrid. Customers can literally find a Civic model that meets a variety of needs and interests.

Finally, among many other very positive reviews of the Civic lineup, Motor Trend magazine recently tested eight compact cars, including Civic. The respected auto enthusiast magazine - which knows a thing or two about ride and handling - ranked Civic second among eight compact cars in the comparison drive. Many would be thrilled with this result. However, we disagree with Motor Trend as well - we think there is no better compact car than Civic.

Is the small sedan segment more competitive than ever? Without question. But in virtually every way, the completely redesigned 2012 Civic is a step forward that our customers will value and enjoy. So, while we will continue to have great respect for Consumer Reports, regarding their editors' review of the Civic LX - we will just have to agree to disagree… strenuously.

The Acura brand finished third overall in the 2011 IQS.

In the manufacturing realm, the 2011 study recognized three Honda plants for superior quality, including Honda's newest U.S. auto plant in Greensburg, Ind. Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, producing the Civic Sedan, was one of only three plants around the world to earn the Platinum Plant Quality Award. DETROIT –The 2012 Buick LaCrosse with eAssist™, which is expected to deliver 25 percent better highway fuel economy than the current model, will be priced starting at $29,960 before an $860 destination charge.

“LaCrosse with eAssist is the smart choice for those who want great fuel economy without sacrificing the driving dynamics and passenger comfort that have made Buick the fastest-growing major automotive brand in the United States,” said Tony DiSalle, U.S. vice president of Buick Marketing.

LaCrosse with eAssist uses a variety of advanced technologies and body enhancements to deliver up to 37 mpg highway fuel economy, better than the Lexus HS Hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, as well as non-hybrids like the Acura TL, Lexus ES350 and Lincoln MKS. eAssist will be the standard powertrain for LaCrosse, which will be built at the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kan.

The fuel economy boost that LaCrosse with eAssist offers comes from state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery system and electric motor-generator that enables regenerative braking capability. This “light electrification” system also will be available on the 2012 Buick Regal later this year.

Although eAssist is the standard powertrain, a new, more powerful and more efficient version of the direct-injected, E85-capable 3.6L V-6 with variable valve timing, Is available at no additional cost on select trim levels. The front-wheel-drive 3.6L model is rated at an SAE-certified 303 horsepower (226 kW) – an improvement of 23 hp – and 264 lb.-ft. of torque (358 Nm). An all-wheel drive version, which is yet to be rated, also is available.

The 3.6L engine’s new, integrated cylinder head/exhaust manifold design and a composite intake manifold help reduce its weight by more than 20 pounds (9 kg), which increases horsepower without any loss in fuel efficiency. The direct-injected engine also warms up faster, which can cut emissions of unburned hydrocarbons by up to 25 percent.

Additional new standard features for 2012 include dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloy wheels, full-color driver information center, and Bluetooth and USB connectivity.

Later in the year, LaCrosse with eAssist will come with standard Buick IntelliLink, which uses Bluetooth or USB to connect the driver’s smartphone to a new 8-inch, high-resolution, full-color touch screen display radio. IntelliLink expands on Buick’s current Bluetooth and USB capabilities to allow smartphone control via voice activation and steering wheel-mounted controls. It also enables streaming stereo audio from the phone through services like PANDORA^® Internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio^®.

Most importantly, Buick IntelliLink enables seamless integration of stowed portable devices with each vehicle’s infotainment system, allowing drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Honda today announced plans for the accelerated recovery of auto production in North America following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Honda will increase production volume at its North American automobile plants to a rate of 100 percent of the original production plan in August, for all models except the 2012 Civic.

As the supply of parts from Japan improves, production will ramp up in August on a step-by-step, plant-by-plant, and model-by-model basis, with production returning to 100 percent of the original plan for models including the 4-cylinder Accord, CR-V and Acura RDX, as well as all V-6 models including the Accord, Accord Crosstour, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, and the Acura TL, MDX and ZDX.

Production of the all-new 2012 Civic lineup will continue at a reduced rate of approximately 50 percent due to the limited supply of key components. However, this situation continues to be evaluated and full production is expected to resume sometime in the fall, with plans to meet anticipated strong demand for the fuel efficient new Civic lineup.

"The light at the end of the tunnel is glowing brighter for us, represented by this significant improvement in our production situation," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Throughout this crisis, Honda has been fighting to achieve a speedy recovery, while maintaining a focus on our longer-term plans for continued growth in sales and production in order to meet the growing needs of our customers."

Honda has managed the unprecedented parts supply issues that resulted from the devastating impact of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan with no layoffs at any of its 14 production plants in North America.

"I am quite proud of the efforts of our manufacturing team and the steps they have taken to keep our team of associates together during this difficult period, while maintaining their normal, outstanding focus on quality for the customer," said Mendel. "We still have challenges to overcome, but once we have normalized operations we will owe them a great debt of thanks."

Honda would like to express its deepest sympathy and condolences to the victims of the earthquake in Japan, and our sincere hopes for the earliest possible relief and recovery of the affected areas.

North American Operations
More than 80% of Honda and Acura products sold in the U.S. are produced in North America, and the vast majority of automotive parts for Honda automobiles manufactured in North America are sourced in the region. The following information (in boldface type) updates Honda's production situation as it impacts the supply of Honda and Acura cars and light trucks to the North American market.

•Overall automobile production volume will remain at significantly reduced levels as we continue to operate at adjusted levels of production through the summer months. Honda's goal in North America is to normalize overall production sometime around the end of the year. This recovery will occur step-by-step, and it will vary based on plant and model. As background, on March 30, Honda began to implement a strategy of temporary adjustments that reduce daily production levels at its North American auto plants as a result of interruptions in parts supplies from Japan in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami.

•Honda remains focused on minimizing the impact to associates and their families, and plans no layoffs at any of its North American facilities.

•The vast majority of Honda's parts and materials are sourced here in North America. However, for global efficiency, a few critical parts continue to be supplied from Japan. Most of Honda's Japan-based parts suppliers have resumed production. Honda is working with the few suppliers that have yet to resume production to re-establish their operations, while also evaluating additional sources for some parts in the supply chain. Teams throughout North America and global Honda continue to work diligently to overcome these temporary parts flow issues. Honda remains committed to doing what it can to minimize the impact on Honda associates, dealers and customers.

•As parts supply stabilizes and full auto production resumes, Honda will quickly develop a production schedule to meet the needs of Honda and Acura customers.

Vehicle Availability
Following is a summary of information concerning the impact of the Japan-based parts supply issue on the availability of Honda and Acura vehicles.

•Production of the all new 2012 Honda Civic will be at significantly reduced levels at least through the summer months. While dealers will continue to receive product, supply will be severely restricted with limited availability of certain models.

•The fall launch of the all-new 2012 CR-V will be delayed by at least one month. To bridge to the launch of the new model, Honda will extend production of the current 2011 CR-V, which remains the best selling SUV in America.

•Approximately 80 percent of the vehicles Honda sells in America are built at Honda plants in North America. Regarding Japan production for the North American market, due to the limited parts supply from Japan, Honda will bring in only a very limited number of Japan-built vehicles for the remainder of the year. This may mean models such as the Honda Fit, CR-Z, Insight and Civic Hybrid, and the Acura TSX, TSX Wagon and RL, will be in very limited supply until later in the year.

•Due to problems with the supply of Japan-sourced paint pigment that adds a shiny luster, certain colors of vehicles may be in short supply. Honda is working diligently to find a suitable replacement for such paints, or to reconfigure its model line with alternative exterior colors. This situation varies by model and production facility.

Other North American Operations
•Honda's power equipment and all-terrain vehicle manufacturing operations to date are operating at normal production levels.
Japan Operations

Following is the current outlook for the impact of the major March 11 earthquake in Northeastern Japan on Honda Motor Co., Ltd's automobile production operations within Japan.

•Concerning production in Japan of finished units and parts for overseas production, production volume will remain at approximately 50% of the original production plan until the end of June. As the supply of parts remains fluid, decisions concerning production from July on will be made step-by-step while monitoring the situation, toward the expected normalization of production in Japan before the end of 2011.

•On April 11, Honda resumed limited production of finished automobiles throughout Japan at approximately 50% of the original production plan, bringing all Honda auto plants in Japan back into production. On April 4, Honda Motor began limited production of component parts for North American plants at several Honda plants in Japan.

•However, since the component situation remains fluid, production of parts resumed at approximately 50% of the original production plan. Honda will carefully manage the situation and manage its operation accordingly.

•Honda will continue to make decisions based on the status of the recovery of Japanese society as a whole as well as the supply of parts. There are still many questions relating to the supply of parts manufactured by other suppliers in Japan and shipped directly from suppliers in Japan to Honda's suppliers in North America.

•While most of our Japan-based suppliers have resumed production, there are a few suppliers that have yet to resolve the challenge to resume their production. In those cases, Honda is working with its suppliers to help reestablish their operations, while evaluating other possible sources for those parts in the supply chain. Please understand that Honda is making every effort to work toward a full recovery as quickly as possible. We appreciate everyone's understanding during these challenging times.

•On March 28, Honda resumed motorcycle and power products production at Kumamoto Factory.

•Honda is exerting a company-wide effort to normalize our production as soon as possible. We deeply regret any inconvenience experienced by our customers and ask for their understanding during these challenging times.
Recovery of Operations in the Tochigi Area

•The impact of the earthquake was more severe at the Tochigi Factory (Moka, Tochigi), however, repair and inspection activities were completed for almost all facilities and equipment.

•At other operations, including the Automobile R&D Center (Tochigi) of Honda R&D Co., Ltd. and Honda Engineering Co., Ltd., associates who will work on the restoration started returning to work. However, based on the expectation that it will take several months until the complete recovery of these facilities, Honda has temporarily transferred some functions such as automobile product development, development of manufacturing technologies and procurement to Honda operations in other locations such as Sayama, Suzuka, and Wako.

•Honda is cooperating with electricity conservation efforts and rolling blackout measures, prioritizing the relief and recovery of affected areas.

Aid
With the hope to contribute to the earliest possible relief and recovery of affected areas, Honda will provide the following aid:

•From Honda in Japan, 300 million yen (approximately $3.7 million) toward the relief and recovery effort.

•A total of 1,000 generators (gasoline-powered and home-use gas canister-powered), along with a total of 13,000 gas canisters.

•The Honda family of companies in North America has established special matching gift programs for their associates for donations to the Red Cross to aid the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Donations from associates will be matched on a dollar-for-dollar basis, with no personal or corporate donation limit. Honda employs more than 29, 000 associates in North America. In addition, American Honda has established a special website to channel donations to the American Red Cross* from customers, suppliers and others interested in supporting the Japan disaster recovery effort through the Red Cross. Originally established to accept donations from Honda and Acura automobile dealers, and Honda motorcycle and power equipment dealers, Honda opened the site to the public who may wish to donate, To date, the Honda Associate matching gift program and the "Friends of Honda" campaign through the Red Cross have raised more than $800,000. Starting with 2011 models, NHTSA has introduced tougher tests and more rigorous requirements for its five-star ratings that provide more information about safety feature performance and crash-avoidance technologies.

The LaCrosse received five-star ratings for both the Overall Frontal Crash and Overall Side Crash. These crash test ratings are intrumental in helping prospective car shoppers evaluate the safety performance of new vehicles.

The LaCrosse offers these safety features:

■Intelligent technologies delivering a “360-degree” field of vision behind the steering wheel for a greater feeling of comfort, control and safety
■Side blind zone alert technology notifying the driver if a vehicle in adjacent lanes is traveling in the driver’s blind spot
■Rearview camera system featuring a display integrated into the navigation system screen
■Front- and side-impact air bags as well as roof-mounted head-curtain air bags that help protect occupants in the event of a rollover crash
■An advanced front-seat safety belt system including a dynamic locking latchplate, dual pretensioners that help tighten the safety belt for earlier restraint of the occupant during the onset of moderate to severe crashes; and load limiters that help limit the forces on the occupant to help reduce the risk of injury
■GM’s StabiliTrak stability- and traction-control system
■OnStar (included for the first year of ownership)
GM engineers developed the dynamic locking latchplate, which is part of the front safety belt system. It locks under dynamic crash loading to help securely restrain the occupant’s pelvis, and it works in concert with the safety belt load limiting feature to control loads on the occupant’s upper torso. This safety feature helped the LaCrosse achieve the five-star frontal crash rating for both driver and front-seat passenger.
